Hello. My name is Jessica Durkin. Welcome to my video presentation reflecting on my experiences during an interprofessional collaboration during the implementation of our current telehealth services. In this video, I will reflect on an interdisciplinary collaboration experience, highlighting its successes and unsuccessful outcomes, identify how poor collaboration can result in inefficient management of human and financial resources, and identify best-practice leadership strategies from the literature that would improve an interdisciplinary team’s ability to achieve its goals. I will then identify best-practice interdisciplinary collaboration strategies to help a team achieve its goals and work together.

First, let me provide some details of my interprofessional collaboration experience.

My experience comes from when my healthcare facility implemented its telehealth services. Throughout the implementation period, I worked collaboratively with the in-house and contracted IT specialists, physicians, and other healthcare professionals, as well as with other stakeholders the initiative would impact, including patients. The telehealth initiative was implemented as a necessity to reduce care costs and provide care services at the patient’s convenience. The facility I work for is part of a health system with branches in various cities and locations. We have been trying to establish a system in which all facilities within the health system collaborate as one. During the initiative, I was tasked with participating in the telehealth planning committee, leading a nursing team that was to ensure the telehealth initiative adhered to the regulatory and ethical frameworks, educating users on using the telehealth systems and telehealth communication skills for virtual interactions, and assisting in patient education.

Now, let me explain some aspects of the collaboration that helped the team make progress toward relevant goals or outcomes.

One major aspect of the collaboration that ensured the initiative was successful was timely and effective communication. As a nurse tasked with managing the various team members, I ensured that all plans for the telehealth system were communicated six months before the actual implementation. All stakeholders were involved in the exchange of ideas regarding the telehealth systems. All communication related to updates on progress, implementation dates, and user training was made on time. Additionally, IT specialists informed all communication aspects, making it easier to understand the various aspects of telehealth systems and services, thus easing collaboration. As a part of the planning committee, I also ensured that all participants were assigned roles they understood.

Although the collaboration and implementation of the telehealth services were a success, I noticed that there were some aspects of the collaboration that could have been improved.

I noticed that, at some point, the physicians were more commanding towards the nurses, especially the registered nurses. This led to some issues of disrespect, which, although solved, could have affected the initiative’s progress. I also noted that the IT and management teams made some changes to the brand of the telehealth systems implemented without consulting other stakeholders. This aspect of collaboration can significantly impact the effectiveness of the collaboration and could have been improved.

Reflecting on the experience during the implementation period, I will highlight some ways in which poor collaboration can result in inefficient management of human and financial resources.

Poor collaboration was evident in two major ways during the implementation of the telehealth initiative. First, there was a lack of mutual respect among nurses and physicians involved in the team. Secondly, the IT and facility management teams changed the brands for the related IT systems without consulting other stakeholders.

These aspects of poor collaboration have significant implications for the human and financial resources of the interdisciplinary team and the organization as a whole in several ways. Firstly, evidence from a study by Nyame-Asiamah published in (2020) shows that collective user involvement during the adoption of ICT and telemedicine was essential in influencing the stakeholders’ acceptance of the technologies in clinical practice. This means that changing the brand of the selected system without consulting the stakeholders would lead to unwanted resistance and hesitancy to use the system. This not only delays the full implementation of the initiative but also contributes to time and financial resource waste.

Now, let me discuss best-practice leadership strategies from the literature that would improve the interdisciplinary team’s ability to achieve its goals.

Based on my experience, conflict within the interdisciplinary teams minimizes the ability to achieve its goals. My two best leadership practices would be to inspire and empower by applying the transformational leadership strategy. Robbins and Davidhizar, in their 2020 article, argue that transformational leadership through inspiring and motivating effective communication and positive attitudes enhances the health of the work environment, accommodating all employees and staff. Additionally, an empirical study by Kim and Park published in 2020 argued that transformational leadership created an environment that supports knowledge sharing, which is essential for improved interdisciplinary collaboration.

Before I conclude, let me discuss the best-practice interdisciplinary collaboration strategy to help a team achieve its goals and work together.

My best-practice interdisciplinary collaboration strategy is to employ standardized communication to help the team achieve its goals and work together more effectively. According to Kim et al. in an article published in 2019, standardizing the communication processes improves the effectiveness of communication, which further supports knowledge sharing, goal awareness, ability to resolve issues, respect, and transparency in communication. Such aspects of communication can help the interdisciplinary team to work together and achieve its goals.

In conclusion, my experiences from being involved in the implementation of telehealth services have helped me understand the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, including clear and effective communication and mutual respect. These strategies, if implemented, could contribute to more effective interdisciplinary collaboration and enhance the team’s ability to achieve its goals in telehealth implementation. It was a great experience, and I believe I have improved my communication and leadership skills for leading interprofessional teams.

Interprofessional collaboration is a critical aspect of a nurse’s work. Through interprofessional collaboration, practitioners and patients share information and consider each other’s perspectives to better understand and address the many factors that contribute to health and well-being (Sullivan et al., 2015). Essentially, by collaborating, healthcare practitioners and patients can have better health outcomes. Nurses, who are often at the frontlines of interacting with various groups and records, are full partners in this approach to health care.

Reflection is a key part of building interprofessional competence, as it allows you to look critically at experiences and actions through specific lenses. From the standpoint of interprofessional collaboration, reflection can help you consider potential reasons for and causes of people’s actions and behaviors (Saunders et al., 2016). It also can provide opportunities to examine the roles team members adopted in a given situation as well as how the team could have worked more effectively.
