Cognitive Illusion and Attribution Error- First Day in High School

My case of cognitive illusion happened on my first day in high school. I remember looking for the staffroom to hand in a book to my class teacher. On the way, I met a fellow student I believed was not new. In fact, from the books he had in his hands, I concluded that he was in 10^th grade. I went to him and politely asked where the classroom was. He stood still, looked at me, and continued walking. I immediately got angry and concluded that the 10^th graders were rude and unhelpful. I wondered how I would survive while interacting with them. Luckily, I got help from another student, a 12^th grader. After several days in school, I learned that the 10^th grader I had met was an ESL student from Uruguay. I also discovered that he had a strabismus vision, so he did not even look at me. I also realized that 10^th graders in the school were helpful and were not as full of themselves as I had concluded.

This was a case of cognitive illusion because the boy’s actions were misled by judgment. Attribution error happened when I concluded that 10^th graders were rude and unhelpful. Notably, cognitive illusion happens when one sees an action and makes a wrong judgment from that action (Bruckmaier et al., 2021). On the other hand, Ross (2018) describes attribution error as attributing a person’s actions or physical appearance to their character.
