Both Piaget and Vygotsky bring so much knowledge to the education department for teachers and educators to learn from and present to the children they are working with. They both acknowledge that children are active learners and organize new information they learn and apply it to old information. They also both believe that language is a crucial component of cognitive Development. Regarding differences, Vygotsky believes children learn and grow through social interaction and guidance. Piaget, on the other hand, believes children learn and grow through individuality. Piaget’s theory has stages, so that means he believes the child learns based on the stage they are in currently, while Vygotsky believes it depends on the quality of the interaction the child is receiving (PIAGET VS VYGOTSKY: SIMILARITIES AND DIFFERENCES BETWEEN THEIR THEORIES., 2018).

Play is an essential instructional strategy used in early childhood education. How could you use play in light of Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory? How could you use play in light of Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development theory?

I have to say I am a firm believer in learning through play. The importance of play is unmeasurable. With Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, play can be used through role and imaginary play, such as dramatic play centers. In pre-kindergarten, there are dramatic play centers, and in the kitchen area, different things can be set up where children can get into a character and learn about that specific role. For instance,e if the center is set up like a vet clinic,c the children can act as a vet or assistants. The children can set up the clinic like a real vets office with posters, a waiting room, and an examining area. Adults can “visit” the children and play pretend right along with the children (Vygotsky and the psychology play 2019). In Piaget’s theory, you can play peekaboo with the child or hide a toy under a blanket and see if a child can find the toy (The stages of cognitive Development according to Piaget., 2019).

In light of Vygotsky’s sociocultural theory, the play could promote students’ social interaction and skills (Brubaker, 2016). When students are playing pretend, they are considering the perspectives of others and transferring something they learned from one place to another (Bright Horizons Education Team, 2021). For example, when students pretend to be running a bakery, they probably learn about that from a book they read or read. They are using what they learned to pretend to be bakers and are also thinking about how a baker would talk, dress, or do other things, such as talk with customers and price things. The students pretending to be customers may even try to put themselves in their parent’s shoes, who they have probably seen go to a bakery as customers. So, students consider the perspectives of others and interact amongst themselves, promoting their social skills and interactions. Suppose students learn about bakeries and bakers in class. In that case, they are also trying to understand what they learned by copying and doing it themselves, which, according to Vygotsky’s theory, is known as cooperative dialogue (Brubaker, 2016). In light of Piaget’s four stages of cognitive development theory, the play could be used to get children to overcome egocentrism (Lewis, 2020). So, for example, an early childhood education

the teacher would have household items such as telephones, kitchen supplies, toy fruits and vegetables, clothes for different professions, etc., in the classroom so that children could use those items during pretend play or imaginative play to role play about others and think in the shoes of others (Lewis, 2020).
