Coaching Style Analysis
Geno Auriemma
Geno Auriemma uses the command style to coach his basketball team as per the clip. The commanding coaching approach combines directive leadership with developmental support, focusing on defined objectives and hands-on training (Championship Productions, 2010). Geno assertively establishes expectations and gives explicit directions to ensure clarity and concentration. Geno provides helpful feedback swiftly to enhance performance and promote learning. This commanding coaching style prioritizes efficiency and outcomes, using authority to guide the team toward goals and develop skills through practical assistance (Capozzi, 2013). Command coaching balances authority and mentorship, creating a demanding yet supportive environment that promotes growth and performance. Geno’s strongest traits are his passion and emotional intelligence. On the flip side, Geno exhibits some coaching flaws, specifically rigidity. While Geno does well by offering informed instructions, it would be great if he stays open to changing circumstances and gives the players the autonomy to do what they deem fit amid changing circumstances. I would not adopt this coaching style because it does not offer room for players to make decisions.
Bear Bryant
According to Runyan (2001), Bear Bryant’s instructional style aligns with the submissive coaching style based on how he issues instructions. First, Bear does not provide practical guidance since he issues instructions in an indoor environment where players do not have the opportunity to experiment with whatever he says. Besides, Bryant demonstrates incompetence which is characterized by the submissive coaching style. At one point, he asks the players to do ‘whatever’ to move the ball forward. This is characteristic of a coach who lacks knowledge of their specific sport. Further, the brevity of his coaching before the game is wanting. Bryant is a lazy coach who fails to offer constructive technical support to his team, a tendency associated with the submissive coaching style. Despite the overwhelming incompetence displayed, Bryant encourages autonomy and agility that will help his players handle changing circumstances effectively. He understands that different players will react differently to different coaching instructions, thus offering them a window to do ‘whatever’ it takes to win. I would not wish to model Bryant since he lacks and/or fails to demonstrate expert knowledge of his sport.
Nick Saban
Nick Saban demonstrates a commanding coaching style. He comes out as an aggressive coach who does not mince his words to communicate a message, including the unprintable (RRocket25, 2010). His language notwithstanding, Saban emerges as a highly effective coach who understands what the team needs to progress. He has pre-determined objectives and the tasks the players should implement to achieve the goals, characteristic of the commanding coaching style (Capozzi, 2013). Besides, Saban adopts an assertive approach by asking the players to push themselves, failure to which they will stay at the camp for up to 40 minutes longer until they figure out the skill he is putting across. Saban’s weakness is his lack of emotional intelligence, especially how he addresses his players. The coaching style is attractive but I would not want to use such strong words against my players
Pat Summit
Pat Smith, the women’s basketball coach at the University of Tennessee emerges as a cooperative coach or more like a teacher. Pat shares her decision-making role with players before implementing them. In her narrative, she demonstrates her confidence in the women she coaches and their ability to make critical decisions and solve problems independently (U.S. News & World Report, 2008). The cooperative coaching style is characterized by balancing autonomy and authority. As the coach gives firm instructions, they also trust players to make key decisions since they are the ones who will be at the forefront of all action. One of Pat’s best traits demonstrated in the video is that she is firm yet approachable. However, Pat is overbearing on her players, and this is likely to kill the creative spirit among players while playing. Besides, she is overly intense, a trait likely to stress players. I prefer this coaching style because the coach instills skills and discipline and allows the players autonomy in decision-making.
Pep Guardiola
According to Bobby (2018), Pep Guardiola applies the commanding coaching style in the Manchester City team. Firstly, Pep makes all decisions regarding their tactical strategy. In the same breath, the athletes sit and absorb the coach’s instructions, ready to comply once play begins. One of the strongest traits demonstrated by Pep in the video is the ability to offer detailed explanations. One of the coaching flaws emerging from the clip is that Pep focuses on winning the next game instead of player development. Focusing on a single game may help the team in the short run, but he is likely to achieve little individual player development in the long term. Although this style is largely successful, I would not adopt the commanding coaching approach because I like listening to alternative views before making key decisions.

Three Coaching Styles
Command Style (the dictator)
Coach makes all decisions
Athletes listen, absorb, and comply
An example of a command coach is Bobby Knight
Submissive Style (the babysitter)
Coaches provide minimal instruction and guidance
Coaches lack competence, are lazy, or are misinformed about coaching
Cooperative Style (the teacher)
Coaches share decision-making with athletes
The challenge of this style is balancing when to direct athletes and when to let them direct themselves
An example of a cooperative coach is Phil Jackson
Coaching Styles Evaluated
Dismiss the Submissive Style
Command Style is not compatible with Athletes First, Winning Second; it may stifle motivation and development objectives and alienate athletes
Cooperative Style provides structure and rules, and allows athletes to set their own goals and strive for them
Cooperative Style coaching is more complex and requires more skill
