Summary of strengths:

The practical experiences in diagnostic reasoning skills and the psycho-therapeutic management plan design are my strengths. These components are considered significant in the realization of better clinical outcomes. I can independently discuss the psychopathology of various mental disorders. Additionally, I can accurately list the differential diagnosis for various mental disorders.

 Opportunities for growth:

Opportunities for growth are centered around psycho-therapeutic treatment planning, psychiatric evaluation and diagnostics. I want to be able to independently provide psycho-education to individuals who need it, as well as to my fellow caregivers. Additionally, I want to have the necessary knowledge of the techniques utilized in health promotion and psychiatric disease prevention. In diagnostics, I want to independently be able to formulate diagnoses per the DSM 5 manual. Some mental disorders have overlapping symptoms. Whereas these symptoms are outlined in the DSM 5 diagnostic tool, establishing an accurate diagnosis may sometimes present considerable difficulties (Guloksuz et al., 2017).
An example of this is evident in the distinction between schizophrenia and schizophreniform disorder. I also want to sharpen my skills in performing and interpreting a comprehensive mental and functional examination of psychiatric patients. These components of patient evaluation are critical in the accurate diagnosis of various mental disorders.

Now, write three to four (3–4) possible goals and objectives for this practicum experience. Ensure that they follow the SMART Strategy, as described in the Learning Resources.

1. Goal: Possess adequate knowledge in performing and interpreting mental and functional examination of psych patients.

Objective: To be able to independently perform and interpret mental and functional examinations of people presenting with various mental disorders. Functional and mental examinations are important as they provide information that aids in the accurate diagnosis of various mental disorders. Functional assessment interrogates the person’s routine as well as their social, recreational, and educational aspects. Evaluation of this objective will be based on the ability to independently interrogate the functional and mental aspects of an individual and their nexus to the presenting disorders or symptoms.

2. Goal: Possess adequate diagnostic reasoning skills in formulating diagnosis per DSM 5

Objective: To be able to accurately perform a diagnosis using the DSM 5 tool. DSM 5 lists the various mental disorders and aids clinicians in diagnosing the various mental disorders. Accurate diagnosis ensures better clinical outcomes by enabling the selection of specific and appropriate management plans. Evaluation of this objective will be based on the ability to utilize the DSM 5 diagnostic manual to accurately diagnose mental disorders.

3. Goal: Possess adequate knowledge in the psycho-therapeutic treatment planning of various mental disorders

a. Objective: To be able to identify the appropriate therapeutic plan for each psychiatric condition. Therapeutic interventions vary with the presenting disorder. Better clinical outcomes will only be attained if the selected interventions are effective against the disorder present Woo, S. M., & Keatinge, C. (2016). Evaluation of this outcome will be based on the ability to accurately select an effective treatment plan for the various mental conditions.
