Classroom Reflection-Growth and Implementation
The class has been instrumental in equipping me with effective strategies incorporated in a preschool class to develop reading skills. Effective reading skills increase a student’s ability to build their academic language skills. A student should improve their phonological awareness to advance their reading skills. I have learned that words are made of letters, and each letter is associated with a unique phoneme. Students should recognize and manipulate sounds in a word by linking each sound to its respective letter to improve their reading skills and comprehension of a given text (Foorman et al., 2016). Upon a student learning the English consonants and vowels, the teacher can guide them through blending and segmenting sounds and letters in a word to increase their understanding of how words are formed. To build students’ phonological awareness, the teacher should use simple words, such as consonant-vowel-consonant words. Once students acquire the expected skills, the teacher can move to more complex words. The teacher should demonstrate each learning concept before giving the students examples to work on individually.
I will incorporate effective teaching strategies, practices, and tools in my future classroom. Teaching strategies foster a conducive learning environment and encourage students’ participation and engagement in the learning activities. I anticipate fostering an inclusive learning environment by incorporating multisensory teaching strategies. Multisensory strategies help teachers address each student and eradicate exclusion or discrimination in the learning environment (Alenizi, 2029). Students have different learning needs, abilities, and preferences. Multisensory strategies allow students to utilize the most effective strategy that aligns with their needs. Also, I will use supportive tools, such as Elkonin sound boxes, to guide students in blending and segmenting activities.
Moreover, the class has molded my teaching skills and promoted professional development. Developing the lesson plan activities has reinforced the significance of preparedness for any lesson to help achieve the learning objectives per the curriculum guidelines. The class has provided me with the skills required to develop lesson plans to help implement future lessons. The DAR activities have demonstrated the importance of setting a supportive learning environment for students’ learning process. I have learned effective classroom management strategies, including developing class routines and regulations, position and arrangement, and maintaining students’ attention. Further, the class has taught me ways of addressing indiscipline without disrupting the learning activities. For instance, non-verbal cues are used to respond to bad behaviors from a student that may affect other students’ concentration without affecting the learning process.
Teachers should incorporate more effective technology in the classroom. For instance, they should use different platforms to reach students and communicate the expected learning objectives for the proceeding class. Early communication on what students will learn in the following class enhances their preparedness and increases their understanding of the learning concepts. The teacher should provide students with supplemental resources to reinforce the learning objectives. Students should maintain good seating arrangements to help the teacher coordinate the learning process and ensure that the students are attentive and conform to recommended behavior. The teacher should also collect feedback from students to understand their expectations, which will help align the teaching strategies and practices with students’ learning needs. Effective teaching strategies steer better performance and encourage students’ participation in learning activities. Students develop a sense of belonging and ownership of the class, improving their performance. Further, the teacher should maintain effective interpersonal skills with the students to free them to air their suggestions on the teaching practices.
