Christian Worldview of Criminality

Criminology theories do not sufficiently explain the origin of criminal tendencies. This calls for an alternative outlook that can better explain what motivates people to commit crimes. To that end, the Biblical perspective has proved to explain the origin of sin. According to the Biblical perspective, sin nature and original sin have explained the root cause of criminal behavior in humankind. Sin nature shows what leads people to sin, how it adversely affects people, how it is acquired, and what humankind can undertake to overcome criminal behavior.

From the outset, the concept of original sin in the Garden of Eden explains the origins of criminality. God instructed Adam and Eve not to consume the forbidden fruit, but the two defied the order through external influence through the ‘snake.’ Subsequently, God evacuated Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden. According to Genesis 3:14-19, other punishments include being instructed to till the land to get food and that they would eventually die (New International Version, 2011). The two were initially shielded from these responsibilities, but their defiance led them to lose their privileges. Based on this perspective, people sin because they have lost favor with God, which leads to moral brokenness.

Another Biblical text that offers an insight into humankind’s sinful nature is Romans 8:3. In the text, Paul emphasizes that humans have ‘sinful flesh’ (New International Version, 2011). This is reflected by how people are more susceptible to sinning than doing the right thing. For instance, people find it easier to lie than to tell the truth. The sinful flesh referred to by Paul was acquired after Adam and Eve defied God’s instructions. To that end, no one can claim to be righteous or that they have never sinned. Biblical insights further aver that Jesus is the only individual free from the original sin.

In light of the original sin committed by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, sinful traits have since been passed through generations. Even an infant or a child inherits sinful traits and is willing to commit evil acts at the slightest opportunity (Sethi & Shukla,2021). Today, sin is passed from a human father to a child. In other words, if the father harbors sinful traits, they will transfer them to their children. This explains why only Jesus did not sin his entire life. Since Jesus was not conceived conventionally, his father did not pass his sinful traits to him.

According to Sethi and Shukla (2021), the effects of original sin make people pursue selfish endeavors. For instance, people are obsessed with material wealth to the extent they can kill their loved ones just to add to their portfolio. Cases of people killing their spouses to inherit their wealth or receive insurance compensation are on the rise. I have seen people engaging in physical fights because of money-motivated conflicts. Given the impact of the original sin on people’s motivation to engage in criminality, secular authorities have adopted other entities to ensure coexistence. In the contemporary, the fear of imprisonment offers humankind a negative incentive to sin.

Overall, the Biblical perspective offers the most comprehensive theoretical explanations for criminology. The Bible avers that Adam and Eve’s defiance of God’s instructions made humankind sinful by nature. Subsequently, fathers transfer these sinful traits to their children through childbirth. Today, everyone has a criminal mind. Were it not for the criminal justice systems that offer a negative incentive to sin, the world today would be inhabitable.
