Fostering a growth mindset in the classroom is a powerful tool for improving student motivation. Provide an example of a student who is experiencing a fixed mindset. How would you address this in your classroom and help that student shift their thinking from fixed to growth?
An example of a student experiencing a fixed mindset their thoughts would be if the child did not believe they could grasp subtraction. I would first talk to the students about why they are feeling the way that they are feeling, and if we could find reasoning, I would be more than happy to help the change their mind so that he believes with the correct assistance, they can accomplish anything he sets their mind to. After speaking with the child and developing a game plan, I will give more hands-on assistance to the child, providing the child with objects they can act out the equation with to fully grasp the concept of subtraction. After working with the objects for some extra practice with the educator, the child will then use this activity when he has problems that have to do with subtraction. Also, communicating with the parents to provide practice worksheets and materials needed to help their child grasp the concept. Autonomy is an essential part of developing motivation. How can you encourage autonomy in the classroom within the grade level you plan to teach? Provide 2-3 specific examples of how students will practice autonomy in your classroom.
I will encourage autonomy in the classroom by making the children feel heard within the walls of our class. Children will always have a say in the options provided by the educator and multiple assessment forms so each child can decide how they would like to complete the assessment. Children will become more engaged in their studies and learning if they can choose how they present their knowledge and if they feel like they are being heard about their education. A few examples of strategies I would like to try and incorporate in my classroom is classroom graphing; children can have three popsicle sticks: green, red, and yellow. Each color will stand for their comprehension of a particular lesson or reading. If children understand what is being asked of them, they can show their green stick; if they understand but may need it explained differently, they can show their yellow stick. And suppose a child has no idea what is happening, what is expected of them, or what the assessment is. In that case, they can show their red stick to acknowledge that they need assistance, either provided differently or differently. I think this example will significantly benefit the children in the classroom. I will be able to better monitor each child’s needs independently during a short period and provide needed assistance to the children in the classroom. Another example of what I would like to try in my classroom would be providing multiple means of assignment directions; this could be paper handouts, picture images of tasks, video recording, or video audio; it depends on the needs of the students within the classroom. Always offer multiple ways for children to practice their comprehension skills and build independence.
