Advocacy is important because it ensures people that their voices are heard, and their needs are provided, especially for issues that are important to them. You must have a clear message to share when advocating as a professional who works with parents and children. You advocate for quality early care and education; you can focus on creating awareness, building support, working for change, developing professionalism, promoting child and family issues, and informing public policy.

The chapter focuses more on how to help parents become advocates for their children and themselves than it does on dealing with problem parents. The Central idea underlying this chapter is that by helping families understand how schools operate, the potential of having parents who are frustrated or angry is reduced. Teachers need to help the parents advocate the education of their children. For example, connecting with educators and administrators in casual and formal settings is very helpful because, as a parent, you can address problems or issues with your child that a teacher cannot address. Parental advocacy is the most important thing that can improve the quality of life for your child with special needs. Advocate parents can impact every area of their child’s life, from their ability to function and progress in school to their ability to experience great joy and contentment. Promoting equity in a classroom is important because equity in education requires implementing systems to ensure every child has an equal chance of success.

Dr. Pierson’s Tedtalk highlights the importance of value and human connection or relationship between teachers and students. She also explains her mother’s methods to ensure the children enjoy themselves while learning and are not afraid to risk thinking and learning. She said that no significant learning can occur without a significant relationship. As a teacher, an adult we must understand the power of connection and insist that they become the best ey can be. Every child needs a champion to guide them in their learning while the kids enjoy the power of connection.
