Characteristics Of An Effective Behavior Intervention Plan
A behavior intervention plan (BIP) refers to a proactive plan outlining steps to teaching a replacement behavior that suits the purpose of the behavior that has been targeted (Yell et al., 2013). An effective BIP should be directly based on the functional behavior assessment (FBA) results to facilitate the proper course of action. The FBA can be considered a diagnosis whereas the BIP acts as the appropriate treatment based on the diagnosis.
Secondly, an effective BIP should be technically sound. This means that both the BIP and FBA should be based on the Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) principles. Whereas FBAs help determine the link between the problem behavior and the environment; BIPs help alter this link to promote socially acceptable behaviors (Yell et al., 2013). Thirdly, BIPs should be a good fit with the skills, resources, and values of the individuals in charge of implementing them. The plan should be one that can be implemented; and should therefore match the present routines, be effective to enable people to continue implementing it, and be efficient in regard to resources and time (Yell et al., 2013). Fourthly, effective BIPs should also be comprehensive. A BIP takes on a multi-dimensional approach to various problem behaviors and integrates various procedures into one plan that needs to be implemented in every setting where the problem behavior takes place.
Lastly, an effective BIP should describe what everyone will change. The plan should reflect the complex link between social context and problem behavior. The plan should therefore change one’s behavior by altering the social context in which that behavior takes place. Therefore, the plan should be able to comprehensively explain how staff, parents, and teachers will alter their behavior (Yell et al., 2013).
