Changes that Occur During Aging
Aging is a complex process that involves a wide range of biological, psychological, and sociological changes. Despite the fact that many people age gracefully and have happy lives, some changes can raise concerns. I, for one, am concerned about these changes. Biologically, one of the concerning things is the physical decline, which includes a reduction in muscle mass, decreased bone density, reduction in strength, cognitive decline, and slowed metabolism, just to mention a few. These physical changes usually negatively impact a person’s everyday life, for instance, having difficulty with memory or even performing daily tasks that require a little physical strain.
Consequently, physical decline can also bring about health issues because the body is slowly breaking down, and so are all the bodily functions required to keep it alive and healthy. Leading a healthy lifestyle is the best way to help manage these concerns. Eating balanced diets, getting regular checkups, physical exercise, and drinking water can go a long way in helping a body stay healthy longer.
Some of the psychological changes of aging that I am concerned about are isolation and psychological distress. This mostly stems from the fact that as I grow older, I will begin losing people I have known all my life, including my parents, aunts, uncles, and friends. Trying to cope with these losses can be challenging. The best way to manage these psychological changes would be to find support groups and maintain social connections. Sociological changes that I am most concerned about are the changes in roles and tasks and discrimination and ageism, whereby older adults face stereotypes, discrimination in employment, and barriers to healthcare access. In the case of these discriminations and stereotypes, the best way to reduce and manage them is through developing intergenerational connections and educating the younger generations on hold to interact with older adults.
