Parents display several challenging behaviors to teachers or at school. Challenging behavior is any character that affects learning, success, and development. Therefore, it can harm a child and other learners and place them at high risk of conflicts, social issues, and even failure in school. Some challenging parent behaviors are parents’ negative attitude towards the teacher, high expectations concerning the children and the teacher, and disrespect.

Parents’ negative attitude towards the teacher can be challenging because this kind of approach makes the teacher-parent relationship unhealthy. As a result, it affects children’s learning. Gestwicki says that cultural attitude determines how parents perceive tutors’ roles and their relationship with the teacher (486). Parents with negative cultural attitudes will perceive the teacher’s role as ineffective and unproductive, thus making parent relationships much more unhealthy. Gestwicki affirms that children whose parents have a negative attitude towards the teachers are likely to be unsuccessful in school (p. 485). Such a negative attitude can irritate teachers. For instance, most teachers see a lack of punctuality as a sign of hostility or indifference. The teacher can address this challenge by examining their attitudes and assumptions about children and parents of diverse ethnic, class, and configuration backgrounds. This will help the teacher understand that lack of punctuality does not infer indifference or hostility but can have different orientations about time within the family culture. The other strategy is establishing a welcoming environment that makes the teacher more approachable. A welcoming environment or a culturally safe classroom is good for both the children and parents and will change parents’ attitudes toward the teacher.

The second challenging parent behaviour is having unrealistic expectations of teachers. Parents often place high expectations on teachers about their children. They often expect so much to be performed by the teacher, yet they must also execute a more significant share of the children’s education. This means that parents expect their children to achieve more and better than they currently do. They also believe teachers are perfect and should ensure their children perform regardless of the challenges or inadequacies. The first solution for solving this challenging behaviour is for the teacher to encourage open communication with the parents. Open communication allows the teacher and the parent to discuss the child’s learning issues (Gestwicki 494). During such conversations, the teacher would make the parent understand that the parent’s expectations are extreme depending on the child’s ability. Secondly, the teacher should learn about other cultures to understand that a child whose parents have expectations is from a culture that sets high standards and expectations for both the teacher and the children.

The last challenge is the parents disrespecting the teacher. Some parents are too disrespectful to the teacher, especially when they feel the teacher is of a lower standard or class than expected. The primary assumption of disrespect is the absence of communication between the teacher and the parent. Some parents even visit school and argue with the teacher in front of learners, displaying a great deal of disrespect, which makes the teacher feel belittled and humiliated. This causes the teachers to avoid engaging with parents, particularly those they think to be from certain classes or ethnicities. The solution to this challenge is that the teacher should first examine personal attitudes and understand that culture can determine one’s attitude (Gestwicki 490). With this understanding, the teacher will realize that the parents are not disrespectful, but cultural influences have played a greater role in his/her disrespectful attitude. The other option is to start an open dialogue between the teacher and the parent, which would help fix the problem regardless of the situation.
