Challenges to Finding a Solution: PFAS Contamination in the U.S

Challenges to Finding a Solution: PFAS Contamination in the U.S

One of the pressing environmental issues in the United States is contamination caused by per and poly-fluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), often called “forever chemicals.” PFAS are chemical substances used in producing firefighting equipment and military equipment. These chemicals are highly hazardous to the environment, and research has shown that they are linked to severe health issues, such as cancer and even damage to the liver (Panieri et al., 2022): Challenges to Finding a Solution: PFAS Contamination in the U.S.

The U.S.  Military bases are major sources of PFAS, where firefighting substances containing these chemicals have been absorbed into the soil and water sources; this also has affected the nearby population. More than 80% of U.S. military bases have been negatively impacted by PFAS contamination, and 99 percentage of the surrounding population contains these chemicals in their blood (Kluger, 2024).

Challenges in Implementing a Solution

Regulatory and Policy Hurdles

While the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set new contamination limits and aims to push for PFAS cleanup by 2029, the military’s efforts have been slow, facing criticism from environmental groups. The clean-up activities have been hampered by a lack of clear plans and deadlines, also inadequate funding has further delayed the process. Disagreements between regulatory agencies and responsible entities create delays, making it difficult to implement effective remediation measures (Kluger, 2024).

Technological and Logistical Challenges

The eradication of PFAS from the environment requires effective modern methods because the chemicals are extremely persistent and difficult to remove from the environment. Traditional water and soil treatment methods are often ineffective, necessitating the development of advanced remediation technologies. However, large-scale implementation of such solutions is expensive. The complexity of safely neutralizing PFAS has made it difficult to apply solutions quickly to safeguard all affected places (Kluger, 2024).

Subsequently, to effectively address PFAS contamination, significant investment in modern clean-up technologies and proactive engagement with affected communities is necessary. Without well-directed efforts, the persistence of these chemicals will continue to pose environmental and health risks across the U.S.

Discussion 2: Challenges To Finding A Solution

NO AI AT ALL:

You will research a current environmental issue and analyze it for the challenges that exist in finding a solution.

  • Research a current environmental issue using online websites.
  • Find a website that you feel provides enough information for you to summarize both the environmental issue and comment on at least two challenges, from the ones you learned about in this module, in implementing a solution to this issue in your discussion post.
  • Include the website link in your discussion post.
