Power, legitimacy, and urgency are three attributes given to stakeholders. With power, the stakeholders can vote with their wallets. They can decide if they want to support a company that aligns with their views and either continue shopping with them or go elsewhere. Knowing that stakeholders have this power motivates Home Depot to maintain its environmentally friendly practices. Home Depot is certified by the Forest Stewardship Council, which strictly monitors and regulates a supplier’s wood products from forest to customer. The certifications with legitimate and reputable councils establish an “honest and ethical” relationship with Home Depot and the FSC. This legitimacy proves to stakeholders that Home Depot is honest and practices what they preach. With the state of the rainforest and mass urbanization, urgency is given to the stakeholders, which puts pressure on Home Depot to challenge other hardware stores to establish and adopt more ethical and environmentally friendly practices.
Home Depot can justify spending so much on philanthropy because investing in the community can help increase revenue. Stakeholders feel good when they feel like they are a part of something that does good, such as Home Depot sending aid to causes such as disaster relief through the American Red Cross and assisting with affordable housing. Another area that Home Depot might benefit philanthropy from could be helping get more women into trades.
They could offer or sponsor workshops that teach women how to do DIY projects, how to use power tools, and be able to have the confidence to do more themselves.
“You can do it. We Can Help.” is what Home Depot lives by. They consider a “customer first” approach to operating the business. They foster this environment in stores by having knowledgeable and helpful staff and ensuring customers can understand the difference between products. Another way that Home Depot can relate customer service to social responsibility is through the children’s workshop. They offer free workshops that bring children into the store and teach them basic carpentry skills. This small workshop brings the community together, brings guardians and children together for an activity, and creates a positive learning environment that the child will most likely always remember.
These warm thoughts bring positive light and atmosphere to Home Depot, where people may consider it family-friendly and continue to support and shop there.
