Case Analysis  – Academic Integrity and Fairness

Case Analysis  – Academic Integrity and Fairness

Case 4e delves into the moral issue of academic integrity and fairness. The English teacher faces a moral dilemma: to follow university guidelines and grade the construction industry students with Fs in their composition course or upgrade the Fs to Ds to enable them to graduate. Whereas English composition proficiency is a prerequisite to graduating in the construction technology program at this specific institution, the teacher is aware that not much writing will be required once they start practicing. Ultimately, the English teacher upgrades the students’ Fs to Ds to enable them to graduate, raising ethical concerns.

One of the parties involved in the case is the instructor. The instructor’s primary role is to uphold academic integrity while paying attention to students’ unique needs (Ruggiero, 2014). Besides, there are students whose academic future is at risk because of factors beyond their control. Finally, the higher education institution is also a crucial player in this issue since the management is responsible for setting regulations that accommodate diverse parties.

The benefits and costs of the teacher’s decision to upgrade grades from Fs to Ds are considered when discussing the case with respect to the principle of utility. Based on the utilitarian theoretical principle, actions are moral as long as they maximize happiness and minimize suffering (Tobler et al., 2008). First, the teacher’s decision to upgrade the students’ grades from Fs to Ds reduced the psychological burden of not graduating for something the students could not control. Besides, the decision enhanced the students’ motivation to effectively complete the remaining coursework because they were free from the stress of worrying about an uncertain future. Since English proficiency and writing skills would not be necessary once the students graduate, upgrading Fs to Ds was morally correct as per the principle of utility.
