Caregiver Support and In-Home Supportive Services
In-home Supportive Services care is commonly used to help low-income older adults, disabled or blind individuals, including children, ensure their safety in their homes. IHSS is widely considered an alternative to out-of-home care services such as care and board facilities and nursing homes. There are several IHSS resources offered in California.
Some of California’s in-home supportive services and caregiver support include AccentCare, Right at Home Sonoma, and California Caregiver Resource Centers, which serve every county in California. Some of the services offered in these centers include house cleaning, wellness checks, bathing, grooming, dressing, meal preparation, feeding, medication administration, reminders, in-home ambulation assistance, transportation and errands, respite break for the family caregivers, and companionship (AccentCare, 2022; Right at Home, 2022; Department of Public Social Services, 2022). Right at Home Sonoma has been recognized as a Caring Super Star Agency for over four years. It is highly committed to ensuring clients’ satisfaction by providing quality care (Right at Home, 2022). The resources also emphasize the need for independence and safety and help the older adults in need to accomplish these by giving them a hand.
Whereas these resources offer quality services to their clients, some additional resources might help improve their services. For instance, older adults are known to deal with various cases of loss and grief of loved ones, which predisposes them to loneliness and depression (Wang et al., 2021). It is important to consider providing counseling services to help them deal with such issues. For instance, a psychiatrist could be included in the services offered to help older adults navigate the stressors that come with old age and help caregivers deal with the stress that might come with caregiving.
