Communication Strategies

Communication is a fundamental part of everyday life. For communication during a speech delivery to be effective and persuasive, it is important that the speaker uses efficient nonverbal and verbal tools, recognizes the environmental variables and the audience involved, and utilizes common tools for acknowledging and managing listener expectations, feedback, and reactions (Morreale et al., 2007). These three tools work together to ensure that the intended message reaches the target audience in its desired and accurate form. Therefore, my upcoming speech that is targeting to convince a middle-to-upper-middle-class audience, which is working full-time but targeting to grab opportunities that can grow their careers with higher education without wasting money or time on lessons that cannot directly connect with their present goals and work, I intend to use communication strategies to explain the advantages of taking a speech class that I am currently enrolled.

When you state your thesis, how will you phrase it to avoid negative reactions from potential applicants expecting more pay and better benefits when they start with the company?

I will write an affirmative thesis statement to avert likely negative feedbacks or reactions that can emanate from potential applicants, especially those expecting better benefits and higher pay when they begin with the firm. In this case, the reassurance or affirmation is that “enrolling in this speech class will give you the requisite skills needed to secure that well-paying job, with better benefits at your first application.”

What language strategies would you use to make your speech more appealing to the entire group?

I would use appropriate, general, vivid, clear, and accurate language to make it more attractive to the audience. The accurate language implies I would use objective language that ensures all statements given are factual and practical (Morreale et al., 2007). For example, I must answer questions like “How can enrolling in this class boost their chances of achieving career progress?”

What techniques could you use to establish common ground with everyone in the audience?

I could use a rhetorical tool at the start of my speech to create common ground with all my audience by asking questions like, “What are your problems?” “What kind of issues do you wish me to address?”

How would you change your speech delivery if the audience mainly consisted of low-income mothers trying to enter or re-enter the workforce?

Finally, if my audience mainly comprised of mothers from low-income families attempting to re-enter or enter the labor force, I would tailor my speech to address their concerns and needs specifically. My thesis statement would also change to give them hope that enrolling in a speech class can guarantee them entry into the job market.

Objectives

Career Fair Charisma

Career Fair Charisma

  • Use effective verbal and nonverbal communication when delivering a speech
  • Identify the audience and environmental variables that influence speech delivery
  • Apply common techniques for accepting and managing listener feedback

Assignment Overview

In this case study, you will explore the process of interpreting audience-related and environmental factors as well as adjusting speech content and delivery to adapt to the situation.

Deliverables

Step 1 Consider the scenario.

Your professor has asked you to give a speech at an upcoming job fair that will convince the audience to take the speech class in which you are currently enrolled. The job fair will be held in a part of the city with a relatively low unemployment rate and the people attending are likely to come from middle- to upper middle-class families. Many of them also work full-time and are looking for opportunities to advance their careers with higher education, but do not want to waste time or money on classes that won’t directly relate to their current work or their goals. You can’t gather all the characteristics of all the career fair attendees in advance, but you do know that the way in which you explain the advantages of taking this course and the type of language you use will affect the attendees’ decision on whether or not to enroll.

Answer the questions.

In a one-page (250-word) paper, address the following related to the scenario:

  • When you state your thesis, how will you phrase it to avoid negative reactions from potential applicants who are expecting more pay and better benefits when they first start with the company?
  • What language strategies would you use in your speech to make it sound more appealing to the entire group?
  • What techniques could you use to establish common ground with everyone in the audience?
  • How would you change your speech delivery if the audience consisted mostly of low-income mothers trying to enter or re-enter the workforce?
