Building Family Relationships
To me, this is the most important thing. As a teacher, you want to get to know your students. You want to understand who they are, their background, and their origins. To do this, getting to know their families is also important. Building a relationship with the family is essential because this helps you understand how involved they are at home with their schooling. To be able to help your student be successful in the best way possible, you have to be able to understand them. You cannot do this if you do not know who they are. Building a relationship with the family also builds trust so they can trust that you are doing what is best for your child. Communication is critical, and the parents need to know that they should feel free to email or call you whenever they have a concern. The parents can also benefit by being involved in their child’s education when they can get ideas from the school on how they can help support them. When they can learn more about the academic program and how it works, this will help them to become more confident about their involvement. Sometimes, parents do not realize how big of an impact they can make at home by being involved. This helps them appreciate their essential role in their child’s education and allows the student to enjoy the parent even more (Reading Rockets, 2022).

A collaboration between teachers and families might be a disadvantage when the parent and teacher do not always see eye to eye on things. This is where the communication comes in, and the parent needs to trust that the teacher has experience with teaching and is doing what is best for their child at school. But the teacher must also understand that the parent knows their child best and must consider what they communicate. This is why having a positive relationship with the parent is so important.
