Introduction

Hello class. My name is Sonya Mendoza. Even though I might have to adjust my routine to balance my work and studies since I currently work three jobs, I am excited to take this program. One of the jobs is teaching. I am a teacher for four to five-year-olds. My second job is in mental health management. I am a mental health manager working on my QMHP-C. My third job is caregiving. I am a respite care worker. I give military parents a break while I supervise their disabled child or children.

I am taking a social work major to equip me with the knowledge, skills, and competencies I need to become a social worker. I expect to learn how to manage my relationship with clients as a social worker and my role in advocating for a better life for my clients. After completing this course, I also expect to earn my Marriage and Family license. My family is the main factor that contributed to my decision to select this program. My husband and I have been married for over 30 years. We have ten children and 15 grandchildren. Interacting with my children and grandchildren has helped me develop empathy and interpersonal skills. I also feel that I can give guidance on relationships based on books as well as real-life experiences.

My decision to further my education has been majorly motivated by my daughter. She is starting NSU this semester as a freshman, and she always knew I wanted to go back to school. She suggested that I can make a living by advising people. She is also willing to support me as I embark on starting a career as a counselor. With the thought already in my mind and my family’s encouragement, I feel that is a goal that may be hard, but it is reachable.
