Brainstorming Persuasive Essay – Abortion

Brainstorm One: Journalistic Questions

Who? Young women and teenagers are most involved in the use of abortion services. The necessity is caused mostly by the high prevalence of unwanted pregnancies among these groups. Unsafe and clandestine abortion procedures are frequent, especially in developing countries.

What? Abortion is prevalent globally. It can be safe or unsafe. Safe and legal abortion is necessary to protect women and girls’ health and human rights because unsafe abortions account for over ten percent of maternal deaths (WHO, 2021).

Where? The occurrence of abortions is global, though developing countries have a higher rate of unsafe abortion practices than developed countries.

When? Abortion is an age-old concept. Abortions have been practiced since ancient times, as long as women have given birth (Eastside Gynecology, n.d). In the United States, abortion has a long history. It was legal in the pre-1800s and practiced by both settlers and slaves. Recently, the practices have evolved from being dangerous to effective and safe due to the evolution and advancement of medicine.

Why? Abortions are mainly motivated by unwanted pregnancies. Unsafe abortions are mostly clandestinely conducted. This is because of poor social and economic statuses, social stigmatization, and illegalization of the practice, threatening to denigrate women’s rights (Hovey, 1985). The topic is important because access to safe, secure, and legal abortion is crucial to the reproductive well-being of women and girls. Additionally, the emotional, physical, and economic consequences of unsafe abortion practices demand a closer address of the issue to ensure women attain the highest level possible of reproductive health. Education and counseling are also necessary because young women resort to unsafe abortion when they do not have information and access to safe abortion (Bachiochi, 2011).

How? Abortion practices can be safe or unsafe. Safe practices include tablet use, dilation and curettage, and manual vacuum aspiration. Unsafe practices include inserting substances or objects into the uterine cavity (traditional concoctions or catheters), ingestion of harmful substances, external force application, and incorrectly performed dilation & curettage, and manual vacuum aspiration.

Brainstorm Two: Listing

Topic. Abortion

Definitions. What is abortion? Abortion is the intentional termination of pregnancy (Bachiochi, 2011). What are safe and unsafe abortion practices? Abortion practices can be safe when the method used is WHO-recommended, appropriate for pregnancy duration, and performed by an individual with the necessary skills within a setting that meets the required medical standards. Practices include tablet use, dilation and curettage, and manual vacuum aspiration. Unsafe abortions occur within inappropriate circumstances and by individuals deficient in the skills necessary. Unsafe practices include insertion of substances or objects into the uterine cavity (traditional concoctions or catheters), ingestion of harmful substances, external force application, and incorrectly performed dilation & curettage, and manual vacuum aspiration (by unskilled personnel).

Causes (why it is done)

The reasons for abortion are personal. They range from unwanted pregnancies, completion of early miscarriage, or conditions that make pregnancy continuation life-threatening (Mayo Clinic, 2020)

Risk factors

Potential risks consist of factors such as ongoing unwanted pregnancy, incomplete miscarriages, infections, and life-threatening conditions.

Complications

Possible complications include prolonged heavy bleeding (hemorrhage), severe anemia, severe chronic back pain, sepsis, disabilities, perforated uterus, infertility, and death.

Why is the topic important?

Information on safe and unsafe practices, as well as the complications, is useful in deterring young women from and preventing the tragic complications of unsafe methods.

Brainstorm Three: Three Perspectives

Static

The current status of abortion is controversial, with debates ongoing as to the legality and illegality of the practice. The high rate of unsafe abortions is an alarming reproductive health issue after the advent of illegalization and restrictive laws that brought about moral stigma.

Dynamic

The practice was legally acceptable in ancient times, both in the secular and religious circles (Eastside Gynecology, n.d). It has evolved from being considered more dangerous than childbirth to being both safe and effective. The practice will probably be legalized in all states with the continued debate and legalization in many American states.

Relational

History demonstrates that legislation concerning abortion has never been driven by women (Boland & Katzive, 2008). Male-dominated institutions have driven the debate on the legality and morality of abortion.
