Best Practice Video Reflection -Phonemes – Segments of Sounds in Speech

Before the segmenting activity on phonemes, I understood that words can have the same sounds at the beginning, middle, or end of the word. For instance, the words’ bat’ and ‘ball’ sound /b/ at the beginning, while the words ‘spoon’ and ‘moon’ have the sound /oo/ in the middle and /n/ at the end. I knew that Elkonin sound boxes were the most effective tools that would support phonemes segmentation. The Elkonin boxes help students identify each sound in a word and place a manipulative in each space to represent all the sounds in the word (Foorman et al., 2016). Students can blend different sounds to form a word more easily than segmenting the sounds in words with more than three phonemes.

Apart from using Elkonin boxes to segment sounds in words, I did not know that picture cards were also essential for phonemic awareness activities. Pictures with different initial phonemes can be placed in a row to guide the students to align all pictures with similar initial sounds to those with corresponding initial sounds (REL Southeast, 2016). The activity’s picture card is more instructional since it helps the students brainstorm each picture’s name to match it with the picture in the row with a similar initial sound. Though picture cards contradict initial knowledge on teaching and implementing phonemes segmentation activities, it is an effective strategy for kindergarten through to Grade 3. Students in these levels prefer visual aids to enhance understanding. Students can identify the names on the most basic pictures they interact with, which helps them match words with the same phonemes at the beginning, middle, and end of the words.
