Using the community site selected in the Topic 1 assignment, perform an assessment of the community (town/city/county) using the “Explore Health Rankings” and “Environmental Justice Dashboard” resources from the topic Resources.

The community assessment will include secondary sources (credible websites) and a physical appraisal (i.e., windshield survey) of the community.

The Community Teaching Project has indirect care experience requirements. The “Indirect Care Experience Hours” form, found in the Topic 1 Resources, will be used to document the indirect care experience hours completed in the Community Teaching Project and presentation. As progress is made on the Community Teaching Project, update this form indicating the date(s) each section is completed. This form will be submitted in Topic 5.

Community Description:

Describe the community of interest (town/city/county) based on your findings from the windshield survey, the “County Health Rankings,” and “Environmental Justice Dashboard” resources.

The selected community is in Cobb County, Georgia, which is a metropolitan county connected to cities like Roswell, Marietta, and Smyrna. The residents of this county live in the urban area nearly 100%. The health outcomes of this county are above the average of Georgia and among the healthiest nations in the US. For instance, the factors that may compromise the quality and length of life of Cobb County are relatively lower than those of Georgia and the USA. These factors include poor/fair health 13%, which is lower than 14% of the US and 18% of Georgia. Poor physical environment ranked 3.0 as compared to 3.6 for Georgia and 3.3 for the United States; poor mental health is 4.5 as compared to 4.8 for both Georgia and the US; and lastly, low birth weight of 9% as compared to 10% of Georgia. Cobb County has relatively better physical environment factors such as house ownership, which is higher than the percentage in Georgia and the United States, and has high broadband access of 95% as compared to 88% in Georgia and the US. However, air pollution matter is slightly higher than the average (Cobb, Georgia | County Health Rankings & Roadmaps, n.d.).

The community has several positive attributes that promote health outcomes. These attributes include accessibility, healthy behaviors, proper housing and ownership, and relatively adequate numbers of health providers among the population. Healthy behaviors in the community include reduced adult smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, and alcoholism.
Barriers or Challenges:

Discuss one barrier and/or challenge of this community based on your assessment findings.

One of the challenges noted in the community is the increased number of uninsured people. This is a barrier that may jeopardize access to health interventions which may negatively impact the general health outcomes of the entire community (Mahmoodi et al., 2023).
Opportunities:

 Examine one area of opportunity that can be addressed through health promotion and support your recommendations with evidence.

One area that can be promoted through health promotion activities such as public education is health behaviors. For instance, further reduction of adult smoking, obesity, physical inactivity, and alcoholism can be reduced through public education to create awareness.
