Being a Part of a Team

Being a Part of a Team

An example of a time I feel my team collaborated and communicated well is a time when my team, consisting of me as the attending physician, two surgical nurses, a surgeon, a cardiologist, a rehabilitative specialist, two internists, and a physical therapist, were assigned a case of a girl who had suddenly developed breathing difficulties with irregular heartbeats and mobility difficulties. Due to skill differences and conflicting issues with the patients, task-based conflicts arose. My team took the time to determine the roles each had to do and when to do them. However, in another incident, I was on a call and, as the team leader, assigned the leadership role to a team member. The team later had an argument as the leader I had appointed was deemed as a directive, did not allow any conflicting opinions to his, and bossed the team around.

Referring to the scheduling sheet provided to the team by the dean of medicine and the patient’s chat helped resolve the role conflict. However, the failure of the temporarily appointed team leader to listen, receive, and provide feedback led to the team conflict. Nursing incivility in the workplace is a total lack of professionalism in healthcare. It involves acts of disrespect and being rude to others, usually with ill intent. For instance, the temporarily appointed team leader was rude to other members, did not accept corrections, and bullied others into doing what he wanted. Nurse incivility in the workplace is linked to poor mental outcomes and reduced quality of professional life among nurses (Alshehry et al., 2019). This makes it an issue of concern in nursing and the need to promote professionalism in healthcare.

Communicating effectively, listening to each other, and staying calm could have helped resolve the conflicts in both instances. Effective communication and active listening have been found to be effective methods of resolving conflicts in healthcare and repairing and building trust among healthcare teams (Kayser & Kaplan, 2020). As the team leader, I would recommend that each team always take time to understand their roles and appreciate those of others and that each team member act as a leader in their own capacity.
