Assessing Community Support for Vulnerable Populations- Strengths and Areas for Improvement

Assessing Community Support for Vulnerable Populations- Strengths and Areas for Improvement

Any group in society that faces difficulties is considered vulnerable. Homeless people, people with mental health issues, and even people of different ethnicities or races are among the most vulnerable populations. These populations are considered vulnerable due to a lack of community resources. This frequently leads to common social problems like poverty, unemployment, and discrimination. These populations face various social issues, including racial discrimination, unemployment, poverty, and alcohol and drug abuse. These issues are highlighted in vulnerable people for a variety of reasons, including drug and alcohol abuse, which occurs as a result of low socioeconomic class, which is known for low income and increased substance abuse. A lack of healthcare available to people due to their low socioeconomic status could also contribute to this. As a result, the population frequently resorts to alternative methods of numbing their illnesses.

Social media is the last thing that comes to mind when considering vulnerable populations. However, social networking significantly impacts this population on both a macro and micro level. Vulnerable populations may be the primary cause of the social media epidemic. Many impoverished populations are deemed weaker because of their ties to social networking. For example, individuals with mental health issues deal with stress differently than many other populations. They are using social media to find support and cope. Social media can improve one’s quality of life and even boost morale (Dibb, 2019). These social networking sites assist in dealing with stressful situations and feelings of loneliness and depression. As a result, an increasing number of people are using social networking sites as coping mechanisms, contributing to society’s social problems.

Several events must occur for social problems to be resolved and for vulnerable populations to receive assistance. There have been numerous movements to help reduce the stigma associated with vulnerable populations. Activities such as “Social inclusion is defined as the “process of improving the ability, opportunity, and dignity of people disadvantaged based on their identity to participate in society” and should be applied in the implementation of the SDGs, according to an article about addressing the healthcare of vulnerable populations” (Tangcharoensathien, Mills, Das, Patcharanarumol, Buntan & Johns, 2018). SDGs are short for Sustainable Development Goals, which are global goals aimed at reducing poverty and encouraging a happy, sustainable lifestyle. In other words, society must unite on various levels to restore the basic flow of people and communities. Political figures must act in office to ensure that communities have safe and adequate resources, healthcare officials must collaborate to provide universal healthcare to all individuals in a population, and society must demolish the notion that poverty makes someone less. Historically, healthcare initiatives have been introduced into the association to serve the public better. Obamacare, the Affordable Care Act, and the 2003 Healthcare Reform Act were examples of such initiatives. All of these acts have worked to improve the healthcare benefits available to low-income communities, aiming to close the gap that exists between vulnerable populations and the issues they face in society.
