Arguments for Regulation of the Media and Entertainment Industry

Arguments for Regulation of the Media and Entertainment Industry

An argument for the regulation of the media and entertainment industry can be developed by utilizing the Culture of Violence Theory. This theory essentially accounts for theories of violence. It purports that persistent exposure to certain behaviors, violent patterns, in particular, may lead to similar patterns of violence later in life. Therefore, the structural and societal factors, including media and entertainment,  surrounding an individual are essential in influencing an individual’s kind of sociological outcomes.

The media and entertainment industry is a type of societal platform where notions about particular behaviors are put in the open. These include television, radio, movies, music, and the internet, which most of today’s population can access. Subsequently, access and exposure to what is displayed, for instance, by social media, may influence and/or encourage an individual to engage in acts of domestic violence. For instance, a lyric or a tweet saying ‘I’m a killer, villain and a sinner!’ may sound like a ‘cool’ thing and a justification for killing and possibly driving a person’s potential to commit a deviant act in doing so (Galtung, 1990).

Additionally, the industry may contribute to the prevalence of harmful myths and stereotypes about violence, including sexual assault. Promiscuity and dressing in a provocative manner are the existing negative stereotypes about rape (Kahlor and Eastin, 2011). A movie, song, speech, or trending topics supporting such stereotypical ideas encourage sexual assault occurrences. Moreover, persistent exposure to a culture of violence presents one with the likelihood of engaging in violent acts later in life.

Consequently, the culture of violence theory is illustrated in the impacts of the media and entertainment industry. Subsequently, regulations can be put in place to control the material passed through this industry to curb its effects. Still, regulations should be put in place to ensure what is conveyed does not encourage domestic violence or any other form of violence. Accordingly, the culture of violence theory explains that exposure to violent behavior patterns through the media can encourage similar patterns in life.
