Why People Could Resist Change

A change could be described as a disruption that alters behaviour patterns or expectations. Whereas the goal is to be open and willing to accept change, employees could resist change for several reasons (Grama & Todericiu, 2016). Employees may become resistant to change due to negative perceptions and a lack of adequate information on the necessity of the change being done and the effect the change may have on them. In addition, employees can resist change because of old habits and fear of managing fresh ways. The notion that altering the normal course of doing things could potentially make new ways seem more challenging, which could be difficult for the employees. Furthermore, employees may resist change due to fear of loss, underachieving, or failure (OpenStax, 2019). Consequently, the workers might find it simpler to remain where they are and minimize the chances of losing or failing at something.

Considerations and Methods to Reduce Resistance

Employee resistance to change can be managed by prior preparation. Employees can be encouraged to think ahead of the possible outcomes of the proposed change and take steps to cover several angles to achieve success. Resistance to change is quite normal, and therefore, employees should plan for their course of actions and be flexible to any outcomes Grama & Todericiu, 2016). In other words, they should expect the unexpected and be willing to accept anything that happens, although sometimes things may not go as planned. Conversely, communication is another effective way of managing resistance. Employees could communicate about the change with their fellow employees by evaluating how the proposed change can be implemented. Further, employers should listen to employees’ ideas and allow them to express their views regarding matters of starting transition (OpenStax, 2019). In so doing, the employees will be more prepared for the coming change and less afraid of what may lie ahead of them.
