Clinical Signs of Anxiety

Signs of anxiety observed in the video include restlessness, a sense of impending danger, and trembling (Chand & Marwaha, 2022). Lauren appears restless and shaky during the interview. She worries that her grandfather will die, yet he is not sick.

Obsessive Compulsive Behaviors

Compulsive behaviors seen in the video include touching objects, repeating actions, and confessing (Brock & Hany, 2022). Lauren prepares breakfast for her grandfather every day at 9 A.M. and counts the number of students in her class through every lesson period. She organizes her room to ensure it looks the same way daily. Her bathroom must have an exact number of three body washes. Lauren touches her hair throughout the interview. She confesses how she felt about her classmates, specifically her popular female classmate. Obsessive behaviors in the video include safety, contamination, and scrupulosity (Brock & Hany, 2022). Lauren is convinced that the popular female classmate is after her; therefore, she does not feel safe. She is worried about people spreading germs and is afraid of saying the wrong thing and offending people.

Therapeutic Communication Techniques

The nurse was calm throughout the interview. Anxiety is contagious and can be transferred from Lauren to the nurse and vice versa (Rose & Tadi, 2022). The nurse must stay calm to ensure that the patient is calm and does not feel threatened. The nurse is an active listener. She responds to Lauren’s explanations and even asks questions. The nurse is patient; she listens to the patient without interruption throughout the interview. The patient was interviewed in a private and non-stimulating environment. The interview is in a quiet room with dim lighting where there are no interruptions. A stimulating environment, such as a room with other people or a noisy room, can increase Lauren’s anxiety.

Nursing Interventions

The nurse must acknowledge Lauren’s feelings and experiences to increase trust between the nurse and Lauren. When Lauren trusts the nurse, she will be more comfortable and open to discussing her condition and treatment plan. The nurse should assist Lauren in identifying possible precipitating factors. Once Lauren is aware of factors that precipitate her social anxiety, she will be able to interrupt an escalating anxiety episode. Lauren’s treatment plan might include anxiety medications (Rose & Tadi, 2022). It is the nurse’s role to ensure the patient takes her anxiety medication as prescribed. Lauren shows signs of negative internal dialogue when she describes her feelings towards her popular classmate. The nurse should educate the patient on the importance of positive internal dialogue and the negative impacts of negative self-talk. The nurse can encourage the patient to verbalize her internal thoughts so that they can identify the more positive ones.

Exercise and physical activity are other essential nursing interventions. Lauren should be encouraged to participate in regular physical activity to increase endorphin levels, decrease anxiety, and improve well-being. Non-pharmacological interventions such as relaxation techniques and guided imagery enhance the release of endorphins. Since Lauren will be discharged from the hospital later, the nurse must ensure she is independent and comfortable at home in case of an anxiety episode. The nurse should identify resources Lauren can use at home to manage and prevent breakthrough anxiety. Lauren should also be educated on how to cope with anxiety. The nurse must ask Lauren which coping mechanisms she found effective. The nurse should also aim to instill confidence in Lauren to handle anxiety episodes alone.
