The Interplay Between Intimate Relationships and Sexual Behavior
Arantes, J., Barros, F., & Oliveira, H. M. (2020). Extradyadic behaviors and gender: How do they relate with sexual desire, relationship quality, and attractiveness? Frontiers in Psychology, 10. https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2019.02554
Extradyadic behavior is a common problem today, and it has attracted psychologists interested in understanding its causes and effects. In this study by Arantes, Barros, and Oliveira (2020), the researchers were more interested in understanding the impacts of past extradyadic behavior on current relationships. It also investigated the gender differences in these variables. Quantitative research was done where the participants were issued with questionnaires. There were 364 participants in this research, of whom 251 were female and 113 were male. The researchers found out that generally, men had higher levels of extradyadic behavior and also higher cases of sexual desire. The men also gave priority to physical attractiveness and believed their current relationships were of a lesser quality.
This study is significant when understanding how extradyadic behaviors affect intimate relationships. It also helped to show that men generally engage in more extradyadic behavior. The most outstanding thing is that the points made by the authors of this journal are logical. Not only are they supported by texts in the field of psychology but also by the scientific research they have done. Since the researchers relied on scientific research, it is evident that there were no biases in the presentation of the points (Fletcher et al., 2019). One of the limitations of this study is that the researcher did not consider the possibility that culture and ethnic background can impact extradyadic behavior among men and women. The conclusion was that more men than women engage in extradyadic behavior. This was an idea that was supported by various texts in the field of psychology. For instance, Fletcher et al. (2019) also argue that men engage in more extramarital affairs than women.
van Lankveld, J., Jacobs, N., Thewissen, V., Dewitte, M., & Verboon, P. (2018). The associations of intimacy and sexuality in daily life: Temporal dynamics and gender effects within romantic relationships. Journal of social and personal relationships, 35(4), 557–576. https://doi.org/10.1177/0265407517743076
Sex in an intimate relationship is very important in making the relationship stable. In this study, the researchers go deeper to reveal that emotional intimacy plays a key role in increasing sexual desire in a relationship and also sexual activity. This study also brings a new idea that emotional intimacy increases sexual desire in men more than it does in women. To prove these claims and give an accurate argument, the researchers sampled 134 participants observed in this research. The method used was experience sampling methodology where the participants filled questionnaires and wrote diaries where the information required was gathered. The outcomes showed that it is evident that there is a connection between emotional intimacy and sexual activity among couples. Their study also confirmed that men tend to be more sexually intimate and active when they have a higher emotional intimacy.
This study is very applicable when one is examining the role that sex plays in an intimate relationship. The ideas were logical from a personal understanding and the knowledge collected from this course. According to Fletcher et al. (2019), sex forms a very fundamental part of an intimate relationship. The ideas and points of view were supported by information from course materials, showing no bias. Moreover, there was no bias because the authors relied on scientific evidence. The conclusion made was that sex formed a strong part of intimate relationships and that emotional intimacy also increased sexual desire in a relationship. This is an idea that is also supported by Fletcher et al. (2019), who explain the connection between sex and intimate relationships.
Zhang, W. (2022). The role of sex in intimate relationships: An exploration based on Martin Buber’s intersubjective theory. Frontiers in Psychology, 13. https://doi.org/10.3389/fpsyg.2022.850278
This study examines the role that sex plays in a relationship and how different couples perceive sex in their relationship. This research employed Martin Buber’s relationship theory, where there are the “I-Thou” and the “I-It” relationships. This theory thus helps explain how the way the couple is related also influences how they engage in sex within their relationship. The researchers used a literature review methodology where they explored ideas from various literature. The research uncovered that in the “I-Thou” relationship, the parties in the romantic relationship participate mutually in a given sexual behavior. They can talk and reach a mutual agreement When there is conflict. However, in the “I-It” relationship, sex exists as a tool that can be used for manipulation, and this can lead to the destruction of the relationship, loneliness, or avoidance.
This study is beneficial in giving a better understanding of the role of sex in an intimate relationship. Also, the ideas shared in this study were logical because there are many instances when couples have issues with sex, and one partner uses sex as a tool to manipulate the other, as stated by Fletcher et al. (2019). Most notably, there were no biases because the author relied on ideas and arguments from other credible journals. Moreover, the author’s conclusion that sex is approached differently by various couples is accurate and supported by Fletcher et al. (2019), who also say that some couples use sex to get their way in a relationship.
The Role of the Media in the Promulgation of Sexually Explicit Materials
Bergenfeld, I., Cheong, Y. F., Minh, T. H., Trang, Q. T., & Yount, K. M. (2022). Effects of exposure to sexually explicit material on sexually violent behavior among first-year university men in Vietnam. PloS one, 17(9), e0275246. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0275246
Like the previous study by Lin et al. (2020), this study by Bergenfeld et al. (2022) focused on the impact that exposure to sexually explicit materials can have on violent sexual behavior. In this second research, the scholars were interested in violent sexual behavior among young men on campus. The method employed was a qualitative research method. The participants were 739 Vietnamese university students, and the results of the study showed that young men in the university were very much exposed to violent, sexually explicit material. It further revealed that this exposure was contributing to sexual violent tendencies among the men. The study also showed that young men are mostly exposed to sexually explicit material from a younger age.
This study, therefore, showed that sexually explicit material can contribute to violent sexual behavior. The points made by the author in this material are logical, mainly because they connect with the ideas of Gilbert and Lamb (2018), who have pointed out that pornography has several negative impacts on the psychology of the person with an addiction. This study had no bias because the researchers relied on scientific evidence that limits cases of biases. Moreover, the ideas connect well with the concepts taught in class and the ideas of other scholars like Gilbert and Lamb (2018), who also talk of pornography as a psychological issue that can affect behavior.
Lin, W. H., Liu, C. H., & Yi, C. C. (2020). Exposure to sexually explicit media in early adolescence is related to risky sexual behavior in emerging adulthood. PloS one, 15(4), e0230242. https://doi.org/10.1371/journal.pone.0230242
Researchers believe that exposure to sexually explicit content can lead to risky behavior among the youth. In this study, the objective was to use instrumental variable estimation to examine the relationship between risky sexual behavior and exposure to pornography among teenagers in Taiwan (Lin et al., 2020). The research also included three selected sexual behaviors and multi-modal sexually explicit media. The participants were Taiwanese youth and the method employed was a prospective longitudinal study. The results showed that many youth are exposed to pornography at an early age. For instance, 50% of the participants confessed to being exposed to sexually explicit content by 8th grade (Lin et al., 2020). The research also showed that the more the younger people were exposed to pornography, the more they were likely to engage in risky sexual behavior.
The points made by these researchers are logical because the researchers’ ideas are shared by other researchers like Gilbert and Lamb (2018), who have also argued that sexually explicit materials do not only encourage unethical sexual conduct but can also lead to sexual crimes. Also, it is evident that the author was not biased because the study was quantitative and used scientific approaches. The researchers considered other arguments, such as the role that pornography can play in destroying healthy sexual relationships. These ideas are in line with what is discussed about sexual behaviors in the course topic. Moreover, these are ideas that are also proposed by Gilbert and Lamb (2018) when arguing that pornography is unhealthy both psychologically and in terms of sexual health.
Privara, M., & Bob, P. (2023). Pornography Consumption and Cognitive-Affective Distress. The Journal of nervous and mental disease, 211(8), 641–646. https://doi.org/10.1097/NMD.0000000000001669
Studies show that there is an increase in the consumption of sexually explicit content from the media by men. This study examines this issue and further reveals that consumption of pornography from the internet can be a defense mechanism used by men against challenges like stress, depression, and anxiety and even helps in mood regulation. This research has also shown that the act of watching pornography by men on the internet can also lead to impulsive sexual behaviors. This study that employed a literature review methodology also showed that those who engage in the consumption of pornography from the internet often feel guilty and may have internal conflict because, to them, it is an involuntary sexual behavior. This is an indication that the consumption of pornography could be a result of traumatic experiences.
In this literature review that focused on the consumption of pornography, the researchers were very logical in their argument. Exposure to pornography can indeed lead to addiction. This is an observation that Gilbert and Lamb (2018) have also made. The fact that the author has relied heavily on credible sources and referred to works done by other credible scholars has shielded this journal from biases. The author, however, did not consider other arguments or opposing opinions since the aim of the article was to demonstrate the impacts of exposure to pornography. The author’s conclusion that pornography can be a way that people use to escape other psychological issues is an accurate observation. Gilbert and Lamb (2018) have also noted that some people use pornography as a means of relieving stress.

Choosing what area of human sexuality to study begins with examining the following areas related to the course competencies. Use this as a guide when choosing research articles. One thing to remember this is a course on psychology so the research should relate to human sexuality within that area:
The major theories associated with human sexual behavior.
The history of sexual behavior.
The features associated with male and female anatomies, physiologies, and sexual responses.
Commonalities and differences in sexuality across childhood, adolescence, and adulthood.
Gender roles in the expression of human sexuality.
The current trends in human sexuality.
The interplay between intimate relationships and sexual behavior.
The occurrence and course of sexual disease and dysfunction.
The features of sexual coercion (e.g., implicit and explicit).
The role of the media in the promulgation of sexually explicit materials.
The aspects of culture, environment, and geography that impact sexual behavior.
Using the South University Online Library database, find six journal articles related to at least two areas listed above. The type of articles that you will need to find is research articles located in scholarly journals. Scholarly journal articles are also referred as primary source peer-reviewed articles. What cannot be used for this assignment are web pages, magazines, newspapers, textbooks, and other books. Finally, current research for our purposes is an article that was published within the last 5 to 6 years.
Write a summary for each of the journal articles found.
Write an analysis and evaluation for each of the journal articles found.
