The Major Developmental Theories for Children and Adolescents
Reynolds A. J. (2021). Child development as social action: Reflections on four underrated contributions of Edward Zigler to science and society. Development and Psychopathology, 33(2), 466–482. https://doi.org/10.1017/S0954579420001777
This peer review journal contains a review done by Reynolds (2021) on the works done by Edward Zigler on child development. In this review research, the author examines some of the works by Zigler and confirms that they are very effective today in child development, even though they are rarely considered by scholars in the field of psychology and other fields involved with child development. The researcher clarifies in this review study that Zigler’s contribution involved conceptualization and inquiry of motivation being the main elements required in early childhood program impacts. He also stated that historical analysis of Head Start is essential in child development. He also pointed out that child development in preschool to third grade is essential for their development. He also pointed out that critical analysis of theory, policy, research, and practices is important in understanding children’s development in the early childhood stages.
The three things that make this research reliable and credible are that the researcher is an expert in child development. Secondly, the journal is retrieved from one of the credible databases of peer reviews in medicine, and psychology, PUBMED. The information in this article will also be very helpful in research on this topic since it brings to the fore an approach rarely explored. Additionally, it can be effective in understanding early childhood development. The only weakness of this article is that it does not involve scientific research or experiment, which brings a new idea to this area of study. However, it gives a critical approach to an already existing theory by Zigler.
van der Kaap-Deeder, J., Vermote, B., Waterschoot, J., Soenens, B., Morbée, S., & Vansteenkiste, M. (2021). The role of ego integrity and despair in older adults’ well-being during the COVID-19 crisis: the mediating role of need-based experiences. European Journal of Ageing, 19(1), 117–129. https://doi.org/10.1007/s10433-021-00610-0
Erick Erickson was the psychologist who came up with the idea of the id, ego, and superego when developing the theory of psychosocial development. These same ideas of the theory are thus employed by van der Kaap-Deeder et al. (2021) in this study that examined the role of ego and despair in older adults’ health and well-being, especially during the COVID-19 pandemic period. The results of this qualitative analysis showed that older adults who were financially stable were resilient to the challenges brought by the COVID-19 pandemic. Hence, the impacts of ego integrity and despair in adults were manifested during the pandemic, which reaffirms Erick Erickson’s theory. As seen, its manifestations were characterized by the inability of financially unstable adults to withstand the challenges of the pandemic.
This article is a credible and reliable article for research because it is harmonious with the CRAAP model. Authors like Jolene van der Kaap-Deeder, are experts in the Department of Psychology at the Norwegian University of Science and Technology (NTNU). Additionally, the fact that it was collected from PUBMED, a database for peer-reviewed articles, makes it credible. Also, from the content, one can tell that the research brings a new idea into the field of development theories. One of them is that the ideas proposed by Erick Erickson on ego and id are effective and can be depended upon. Inarguably, the researchers here have relied on the qualitative research method, which is a scientific research method, thus making the study generalizable.
Physical Development from Childhood through Adolescence.
Cheng, A. W. F., Chan, H. B., Ip, L. S., Wan, K. K. Y., Yu, E. L. M., Chiu, W. K., Chung, P. H., & Yeoh, E. K. (2022). The physical and developmental outcomes of children whose mothers are substance abusers: Analysis of associated factors and the impact of early intervention. Frontiers in pediatrics, 10, 1004890. https://doi.org/10.3389/fped.2022.1004890
The use of illicit drugs among mothers to young children is believed to have a severe impact on them and a worse impact on the children. In this research, Cheng et al. (2022) examined the effects that illicit drug use by the mother can have on the physical development of the children. The researchers conducted a retrospective longitudinal cohort study which led to the conclusion that the use of illicit drugs by mothers during pregnancy and also during the early development of the children resulted in developmental delays among the children. This study thus clarified that development during childhood is affected by the parent’s lifestyle.
The reliability and credibility of this article were in the researchers and the nature of the study. The research is reliable and can be depended on because the researchers are well-versed in this study area. For instance, Anna Wai Fun Cheng is a medicine expert and is well-suited to participate in this research study. The article is also a peer-reviewed journal, so it is evaluated to ensure it is well-suited for scholarly purposes.
Norris, S. A., Frongillo, E. A., Black, M. M., Dong, Y., Fall, C., Lampl, M., Liese, A. D., Naguib, M., Prentice, A., Rochat, T., Stephensen, C. B., Tinago, C. B., Ward, K. A., Wrottesley, S. V., & Patton, G. C. (2022). Nutrition in adolescent growth and development. Lancet (London, England), 399(10320), 172–184. https://doi.org/10.1016/S0140-6736(21)01590-7
Emphasis on a balanced diet for growth and development is often made when the child is still very young. However, a balanced diet is essential for adolescents’ growth and development. In this review study, Norris et al. (2022) emphasize the need for a healthy diet among adolescents. The researchers emphasize the effectiveness of a balanced diet, especially on the timeliness of puberty. Puberty is a very significant stage of physical development among young adults. The study also stated that nutrition is important for adolescents’ immunity.
This article was found to be credible and dependable because it aligns with the CRAAP model. Being a peer-reviewed article, it is well examined and evaluated to ensure that it is suitable for academic purposes and purposes like research. The second reason this journal is credible for this research is that it is written by scholars who are well-learned and qualified to give opinions in this field. Most importantly, this study has relied on credible sources during the review. The only weakness of this review is that it is not a scientific experiment, so it cannot be generalized. Moreover, the researchers have not pointed out any weaknesses and strengths of the articles they reviewed, thus making it difficult to generalize the conclusions. However, the information contained is precious for research in this area.
Cognitive Development from Childhood through Adolescence.
Binter, A. C., Bernard, J. Y., Mon-Williams, M., Andiarena, A., González-Safont, L., Vafeiadi, M., Lepeule, J., Soler-Blasco, R., Alonso, L., Kampouri, M., Mceachan, R., Santa-Marina, L., Wright, J., Chatzi, L., Sunyer, J., Philippat, C., Nieuwenhuijsen, M., Vrijheid, M., & Guxens, M. (2022). Urban environment and cognitive and motor function in four European birth cohorts children. Environment International, 158, 106933. https://doi.org/10.1016/j.envint.2021.106933
The environment can affect cognitive and motor functions, as seen in this study by Binter et al. (2022). The researchers in this study examined and evaluated data from four population-based birth cohorts: the UK, Spain, Greece, and France. The results confirmed the hypothesis that the environment impacts cognitive and motor functions because the researchers found out that the purity of the environment, the presence of greenery, and the cleanliness of the environment affect cognitive development. Therefore, those brought up in urban areas with pollution and an impure climate can have challenges in cognitive development.
This source was chosen because it was retrieved from PUBMED, a credible source for academic journals and peer-reviewed materials. Additionally, this journal was selected for research because its authors are well-educated in this area. For instance, Anne-Claire Binter has a PhD in Public Health and Statistics at the Research Institute on Environmental and Occupational Health France. Consistently, the researchers analyzed credible data, making this paper’s results generalizable. Most importantly, the paper will be valuable in the study to support the hypothesis that the environment where the child grows has a direct impact on their cognitive development.
Meredith, W. J., Cardenas-Iniguez, C., Berman, M. G., & Rosenberg, M. D. (2022). Effects of the Physical and social environment on youth cognitive performance. Developmental psychobiology, 64(4), e22258. https://doi.org/10.1002/dev.22258
Several things influence cognitive development; one is the environment where the child is brought up. In this specific study, the researcher has examined the impact that the physical environment and the social environment can have on the cognitive performance of an adolescent. The researchers relied on a longitudinal study which involves the evaluation of data. In the process, the researchers discovered a direct connection between the physical and social environment and the cognitive performance of young adults. The researchers found that the different environments resulted in different cognitive performances of young adults. This study was an indicator of cognitive development which also influences cognitive performance.
Credibility and reliability are the first areas to examine when analyzing a journal. The source was found to be credible and reliable because it is a peer-reviewed journal, and the authors are experts in this field of psychology. Also, it was considered credible and reliable because it was retrieved from PUBMED, a database with only academically reliable sources. Additionally, since it was scientific research, the results can be generalized, thus, its ideas will be used to defend the hypothesis in this study. The research also gives new ideas that can be used to expand the ideas in the study that will be carried out.
