Anatomy and Physiology – Human Senses

Anatomy and Physiology – Human Senses

Human senses can be defined as a biological system used by humans for sensation. There are five basic human senses: hearing, smell, taste, sight, and touch. The senses can be tested using various mechanisms. For the human senses experiment provided by the website, I chose to touch, smell, and taste. I assessed my sense of touch with the help of my friend using two pieces of paper clicks that we made using the instructions given. My friend placed the two tips behind my arm and was progressively increasing the distance between the two clips. This was similarly done on the palm and dorsum of my hands. From the experiment, it was evident that the dorsum of my hand was more sensitive, followed by the palmar and, lastly, the back of the arm. This result was in conjunction with the Science World (2021) order of tactile sensation, and it is well explained that the difference in the level of tactile perception is due to different distributions of touch receptors. For example, the lips and fingers have more touch receptors compared to the rest of the body.

The second experiment was the sense of smell and taste. We assessed the effects of smell on taste using two different flavored candies and tested satiation using tissue paper soaked in perfume. From the experiment, we found out that the sense of taste with isolation of smell was inaccurate compared to when the sense of smell is in action. This is in agreement with the results of most research, which showed that those with blocked noses taste food inaccurately compared to those without a blocked nose. According to the Science World Society (2021), the result is due to the intertwining of the smell and taste sensation pathway. On the other hand, we also found out that after smelling a scent for a few minutes, the smell disappears. This is because of adaptation, as explained in Science World Society (2021). From the two experiments above, I liked the experiment for smell and taste because it helped me understand the basis of loss of smell and test in patients with COVID-19 patients and patients with flu.
