An Overview of TRICARE- Understanding Benefits and Eligibility for Military Families
To enjoy the benefits of being an active military person, duty members must be enrolled in one of the following prime plans of TRICARE, depending on their duty station. The active member must be enrolled in TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Prime Remote, TRICARE Prime Overseas, or TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas (Tricare, 2021). It offers comprehensive coverage of health care, dental, mental health care, vision, special needs, and pharmacy (Changoor et al., 2018).
If the active military person has a family, they can enroll in one of the Prime plans, including Tricare Select, Tricare Young Adult, or U.S. Family Health Plan. The Tricare Select plan is more flexible for the active military person and their family. It is a fee-for-service alternative that allows one to see any authorized healthcare provider (Tricare, 2021). Tricare Young Adult is for unmarried military people and adult children aged from normal Tricare coverage (Tricare, 2021). The U.S. Family Health Plan is for those who live close to the selected medical institutions on the Gulf, West, and East coasts (Tricare, 2021). The active military family can enjoy pharmacy benefits through the Tricare Pharmacy Program, which provides prescription drugs when needed in an easy, safe, and cost-effective manner (Tricare, 2021). They also enjoy vision benefits and dental benefits through the Tricare Dental Program.
If the active member is overseas, Tricare Select Overseas provides comprehensive healthcare coverage in all the areas overseas for themselves and their dependents. In this case, a military ID is needed as proof of coverage (Department of Defense, 2021). The overseas active military person needs to enroll in Tricare Prime Overseas for free and enjoy insurance in areas that are near military clinics and hospitals (Department of Defense). The covered services for this category overseas include pharmacy services, maternity, mental health, and preventive services with any TRICARE program (Department of Defense, 2021). For certain covered services, some copayments may apply depending on beneficiary status and program options.
As active member family members, their alternatives are based on what the sponsor qualifies for. The sponsor needs to enroll them in DEERS and TRICARE. Based on the duty station, the coverage is provided by either TRICARE Prime, TRICARE Prime Remote, TRICARE Prime Overseas, or TRICARE Prime Remote Overseas (Anand, Ben-Shalom & Schone, 2021). They can also buy the TRICARE Dental Program.
