Allocated time refers to the time that is devoted and scheduled for instruction according to official regulations, whereas Engaging academic time is the actual time spent by students being actively engaged in learning and are behaviorally on-task. (Brodhagen & Gettinger, 2012). Both are important as they help determine the quality of education the students receive. The main difference between allocated time and engaging academic time is that allocated time is a fixed quantity that is predetermined by the school’s schedule, while engaging academic time is dependent on the level of student engagement during the allocated time. Another difference is that allocated time is having allocated specific time or duration for instruction and does not guarantee whether the students will learn or be engaged during that time. On the other hand, academic engaged time represents the actual amount of time students have been engaged in learning activities like writing, participating in a lecture, or completing assignments.

There are several ways in which teachers can increase engagement in academic time to increase the students’ attention. First, teachers should ensure that they use teaching strategies that promote student engagement and participation, strategies that may include incorporating group work, practical activities, and more. Therefore, teachers should ensure the time spent on tasks is increased for this reason (Yell, 2013). Another method would be for teachers to consistently update the students on their progress by either writing comments on assignments or tests or talking to them so that they can feel motivated to progress or show improvement as well. Lastly, teachers should also ensure that the learning environment is convenient and comfortable for the students and has a positive learning environment. This will help the students be motivated and comfortable compared to a negative environment where students lose interest in learning. Conclusively, allocated and engaging academic time are both important and may seem similar but are different.

HOW TO ANSWER AN ESSAY QUESTION

Read the questions very carefully at least 2 or 3 times.
Circle the main verb (= action verb/imperative) in the question and decide on the necessary rhetorical strategy for answering the question (cause-effect, comparison-contrast, definition, classification, problem-solution).
Make sure you understand what type of answer the main verb calls for (a diagram a summary, details, and analysis, and evaluation).
Circle all the keywords in the question.
Decide if you need to write a 1-paragraph or a multi-paragraph answer.
Write a brief outline of all the points you want to mention in your answer.
Restate the question and answer it with a topic sentence (for a 1-paragraph answer) or a thesis statement (for a
multi-paragraph answer).
Answer the question according to the general rules of academic writing. Use indentations; begin each paragraph with a topic sentence; support the topic sentence(s) with reasons and/or examples; use transition words to show logical organization; write a conclusion. Use correct punctuation throughout.
Read over your answer again and check if all the main ideas have been included.
Check your answer for grammar and punctuation.
