The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality

The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality is an agency in the United States that operates together with the Health and Human Services Department to enhance medical research and improve healthcare quality in the nation. The Prevention Quality Indicator is applied in the identification of readmissions that could have been avoided earlier through proper outpatient care services. The Inpatient Quality Indicator targets standards of patient care inside the healthcare facility. It shows the patient mortality rate in a healthcare facility that results from poor care. Patient Safety Indicator directs its concern on the quality of care. Unlike the Inpatient Quality Indicator, it targets deaths that are related to complications that could have been avoided (Chambers, Feero & Khoury, 2016).

Lastly, Pediatric Quality Indicators are strictly concerned with the health status of the Pediatric population.

The results of the hospitals’ performance according to quality indicators are reported to the Health and Human Services site. They are also published in the yearly The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality survey. Despite the agency’s efforts and findings, it lacks the authority to penalize the healthcare organizations that perform poorly according to the quality indicators. However, their discoveries help patients make decisions about the most appropriate healthcare facility to visit for effective healthcare services (Kruse, Bolton & Freriks, 2015).
