Advancing the Nursing Discipline, Profession, and Science

After revisiting my week one discussion board views, I have resolved that my opinion concerning nursing being a discipline and not a profession may have swayed a bit. I was adamant that nursing education was not defined as precisely as it should be, that it was more of a discipline rather than a profession (Joel, 2006). Nevertheless, nursing has more characteristics of being a profession than just a discipline. Thus, I now believe that nursing is both a discipline and a profession.

Additionally, nurses provide a compassionate service based on a framework of caring while utilizing empathy and keeping the patient’s dignity and respect as a priority. Nursing needs a predetermined knowledge base and professional attributes to furnish precise individualized care to patients from all walks of life. The art of nursing is a creative use of the science of nursing with the goal of patient outcome improvement (Pfettscher, 2014).

Further, nurses have the responsibility to themselves and their patients to further their education and maintain their advanced skills and training by utilizing evidence-based practices. Nurses can advance and protect their nursing profession by joining professional organizations such as the American Nurses Association (ANA) and or participating in theoretical studies and research (ANA Enterprise, 2019).

Moreover, working in a local hospital as a mental health nurse, I am impressed by Jean Watson’s conceptual framework more than some of the other frameworks. Daily, I must form a helping-trust association with patients to ensure open communication. Every person has positive and negative feelings, and I must acknowledge and support their opinions and help by furnishing a corrective, protective, and supportive socio-cultural, mental, spiritual, and physical environment (Jesse & Alligood, 2014).

Presently, I am a member of the American Nursing Association (ANA). ANA offers numerous personal benefits. Such benefits range from travel discounts to discounts on professional liability insurance. ANA members have free access to research tools such as CINAHL along with ANA Journals and publications. It offers current, up-to-date nursing news, medication safety, and global disease map alerts. Besides, ANA members can link with other nurses and vote on vital nursing issues (ANA Enterprise, 2019).

The evidence-based practice process involves problem identification, asking specific questions, getting evidence-based data on a particular subject, evaluating the quality of the evidence, utilizing evidence-based practice, and evaluating the desired outcome. It is easily remembered by the pneumonic: Ask, Acquire, Appraise, Apply, and Assess. A PICO is a template approach that helps in ensuring the nurse does not forget a specific part of the question. Moreover, PICO is an evidence-based question that looks for factual answers. PICO stands for population, intervention, comparison, and outcome (Hopp, 2012).

The Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) is a not-for-profit multidisciplinary organization. Their primary focus is on researching evidence-based healthcare. JBI works with hospitals and institutions of higher learning to determine if it is complete, sound research completed to be evidence-based. JBI has developed a ranking system that ranks levels of evidence and recommendations based on the methodological character of their design, rationality, and pertinence to patient care. This technique is a way of grading the origin and information by reliability and trueness (Hopp, 2012).

Nurses must continue striving for the growth of nursing as a discipline, profession, and science. Some of the ways to acquire this would be through pursuing higher education and evidence-based practice. Also another approach is through participating in nursing organizations that offer information on up-to-date best practice interventions with expected outcomes and the newest medical research and evidence-based practice in the medical field. The future of nursing relies on every nurse playing their part.
