Admission Essay – Master of Accounting (MAcc)
My strong interest in accounting is predicated on my desire to read and interpret financial statements. The world is full of financial statements and calculations, but few people understand the true nature of where this data comes from or what it means. I am particularly interested in governmental accounting due to its complex nature and the critical role it plays in our society. I need to help businesses thrive by helping them make sound financial decisions based on their current and future projected cash flows. I want to give business owners a clear understanding of what their company’s finances are doing so they can take action to improve it if needed or manage the business more effectively.
My mother is an accountant and has always been a great role model. She showed me the importance of hard work and dedication and the satisfaction that comes with being able to help others through your profession. She helped micro-businesses and small companies organize their finances, calculate taxes, and prepare financial statements and budgets. I had the opportunity to help a business owner or two prepare financial reports for work projects. She helped me realize that accounting was something I could do as a career because it gave me the tools to become my boss and run my own company. My uncle mismanaged his finances, which caused him to lose everything he had worked for. It is a situation I want to avoid at all costs, so I am interested in studying accounting to become an entrepreneur myself. His business failed because he didn’t understand financial statements and how they work. Employees could be dishonest with him, and he wouldn’t know it because he didn’t know how to identify these problems as they were occurring. I want to attain this ability so that I don’t suffer from the same fate as my uncle did.
I remember the words of my father, an entrepreneur: “To be successful in business, you need to understand your finances. When I started as a businessman, I had no idea what was going on with my money. As a result of this inexperience and lack of knowledge, it took me several years before ever getting ahead.” I got my father’s message loud and clear. I decided to pursue accounting to give myself the best opportunity to succeed in business.

My goal is to work at the state level, but I am open to working at any level of government (local or federal). I see governmental accounting as a long-term career goal, but I am also open to other opportunities that may come my way.
I also have a very strong sense of responsibility toward others. I want to help people struggling financially due to a lack of knowledge, which is why I am interested in studying accounting at the Fisher College of Business. There, I will learn from some of the best accounting professors in the country who are experts in governmental accounting and auditing.
