A Reflective Analysis Using Brookfields Lenses
Critically reflective practice, as conceptualized by Stephen Brookfield, encourages the use of four distinct lenses to analyze and enhance professional practice: the autobiographic perspective, the learners’ perspective, colleagues’ stories, and the theoretical frameworks. These lenses give different views that enhance the coverage of events or experiences. This paper applies Brookfield’s four lenses to examine an occurrence that impacts several people in the healthcare industry – the integration of EHR systems.
Autobiographical Lens
The autobiographical level requires the individual to reflect on their life. Based on my working experience in the Arizona Department of Corrections in Medical Records, the adoption of EHR systems was first challenging because of the change in workflow and the relative complexity of the learning curve. Contemplating the transition from manual record keeping to computerized systems, the reluctance earlier stemmed from a lack of awareness and fear of technical difficulties. However, with the growing number of practices implementing EHR systems, issues of efficiency and accessibility emerged, thus enhancing the aspects of record-keeping and patient data organization (Negro-Calduch et al., 2021). The change experienced in this aspect underscores the need to accept change and the advantages that accompany the introduction of new technologies in the healthcare sector, particularly in administrative functions.
Learners’ Eyes Lens
Applying the lens of learners in analyzing the adoption of EHR, the focus is on both the healthcare workers and patients. To healthcare workers initially, EHR systems raised concerns such as massive training on change in technology, as indicated by Negro-Calduch et al. (2021). Some of the common complaints included disruption of working schedules and the time taken to enter data. On the other hand, patients had better continuity of care due to the increased availability of their records to numerous practitioners. This lens focuses on the fact that while caregivers in the health sector are overwhelmed by short-term struggles, patients reap the reward of long-term gains. Such perspectives highlight the need for extensive and continuous education of healthcare workers during these transformations.
Colleagues’ Experiences Lens
The colleagues’ experiences lens entails collective analysis and discussion of observations. According to Vos et al. (2020), interviews with peers indicated that most organizations experienced early complaints but later came to embrace EHR systems. People who had prior experience working in institutions where EHR systems are implemented offered helpful information and advice to others, thus making the transition easier. All these experiences made the essence of peer support and knowledge sharing in dealing with challenges resulting from other significant systemic alterations to be felt. Additionally, discussions with peers proved useful in finding out what measures could be taken to make the process more effective.
Theoretical Literature Lens
The theoretical literature lens is based on scholarly research and theoretical modeling. Several scholars affirm the effectiveness of EHR systems due to the better health status of patients, improved data quality, and organizational resources. The literature also discusses implementation issues and how they affect an organization, such as the requirements for more extensive training of personnel and the constant threat of information leakage. For instance, studies by Albagmi (2021) show that EHR systems can result in fewer medication errors and better care coordination, translating to higher levels of patient safety and satisfaction. Regarding the experiences of individuals, supported by the analysis of empirical literature, such understanding allows considering the general potential of EHR systems and identifying possible obstacles and ways to solve them.
Conclusion
This insightful paper applies Brookfield’s four lenses of practice to understanding the key transformation in healthcare: the implementation of EHR systems. Self-analysis shows denial and gradual acceptance; other providers and patients describe varying experiences; peers present the importance of teamwork; and finally, there is empirical support from the theoretical framework of EHR advantages and difficulties. Together, these lenses add value to the appreciation of the effects of EHR systems as they increase reflection in healthcare practices. It also enriches individual and common experiences in addition to promoting ongoing adaptation in the sphere of healthcare administration.
