A Nursing Theorist of Professional Interest-Madeleine Leininger
The nursing theorist I find particularly interesting is Madeleine Leininger, who is known for developing transcultural nursing theory. Leininger’s theory emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting cultural differences in healthcare and how this knowledge can improve patient care quality (Turkina, 2020). According to Leininger, nursing care should be individualized and culturally congruent, which should be aligned with the patient’s cultural beliefs, values, and practices. This requires nurses to be knowledgeable about their patients’ cultural backgrounds and incorporate this understanding into their practice. Leininger also identified three modes of nursing care (Turkina, 2020): cultural care preservation or maintenance, cultural care accommodation or negotiation, and cultural care restructuring or repatterning.
My favourite part of Leininger’s theory emphasizes cultural competence in nursing care. As a nurse, cultural competence is essential in providing holistic care to patients (Turkina, 2020). By recognizing and respecting cultural differences, nurses can build trust and establish meaningful relationships with their patients, leading to better health outcomes.
One way I apply Leininger’s theory in my day-to-day practice is by taking the time to learn about my patients’ cultural backgrounds and incorporating this knowledge into their care plans. For instance, if I have a patient who practices a certain religion, I will respect their religious practices and incorporate them into their care plan as much as possible (McFarland & Wehbe-Alamah, 2019). This might involve coordinating with the hospital chaplain or providing accommodations for prayer or fasting.
I have seen Leininger’s theory applied correctly in my past practice, which has led to positive patient outcomes. For example, I once had a patient from a different country who spoke limited English. By learning about their cultural background and providing culturally congruent care, I built trust with the patient and their family. This led to better communication and, ultimately, improved health outcomes.
In conclusion, Leininger’s transcultural nursing theory emphasizes the importance of understanding and respecting cultural differences in healthcare. By incorporating cultural competence into nursing practice, nurses can provide individualized and holistic care to patients, leading to better health outcomes (McFarland & Wehbe-Alamah, 2019). This theory is essential in providing quality care to a diverse patient population, and I will continue to apply it in my day-to-day practice as a nurse.
