Script for Kaltura Video: Alternative Modalities in Pharmaceutical Care
Hello and welcome. My name is Mamada Abdi, and today I’m excited to share how alternative modalities and naturopathic options can complement pharmaceutical care across the lifespan. As advanced practice nurses, we are increasingly challenged to personalize care that extends beyond prescription drugs. Integrating evidence-based complementary therapies can improve outcomes, especially when guided by clinical judgment and safety considerations: Script for Kaltura Video: Alternative Modalities in Pharmaceutical Care.
One commonly used naturopathic option is omega-3 fatty acid supplementation, especially beneficial for older adults with elevated triglycerides or cardiovascular risk. According to Woo and Robinson (2020), omega-3s can significantly reduce inflammation and support cardiac health when taken at doses of 1,000 mg by mouth once daily. Another well-established option is melatonin, a naturally occurring hormone that supports sleep regulation in pediatric and geriatric patients.
The standard dose is 1 to 3 mg PO nightly, and it’s particularly effective for insomnia related to circadian rhythm disruptions, as noted by Epocrates (2024). Lastly, St. John’s Wort, a herbal antidepressant used in adults with mild-to-moderate depression, has been widely studied. While it may support mood stabilization, Peterson and Nguyen (2023) note that caution is needed due to its CYP450 enzyme interactions, which may affect the metabolism of other medications.
Throughout this course, I have gained a deeper understanding of pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and the importance of tailoring drug therapies to individual needs. I’ve learned how age, renal function, genetic variability, and comorbidities all affect drug selection and dose adjustments. For instance, understanding the cytochrome P450 system has enabled me to assess potential interactions with both prescription and naturopathic agents, which, according to Woo and Robinson (2020), enhances the safety of patient care.
To illustrate, consider a 70-year-old patient with chronic kidney disease newly diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. Rather than prescribing the typical 1000 mg BID of metformin, I would initiate a lower dose—that is, 500 mg by mouth once daily—to reduce the risk of lactic acidosis. This adjustment aligns with Epocrates (2024) recommendations based on renal function. Such decisions underscore the need for critical thinking and ongoing monitoring, especially in complex patients.
In conclusion, by integrating alternative therapies, personalizing medication regimens, and applying knowledge gained from pharmacologic training, we can promote safer and more effective care across all patient populations.
That’s all for today. Thanks for watching.

Assignment Content
Using the Kaltura platform, address the following content in 2-3 minutes.
- Beyond prescriptive therapies, what alternative modalities and naturopathic options might be considered in pharmaceutical care for patients across the lifespan. Share 2-3 examples.
- Reflect on the learning you have completed in this course on pharmacologic therapy and how it will guide your ongoing development.
- Present the material as if you were giving a report to peers. Include at least one example of a specific change that may occur; be it the drug, dose or frequency. Be clear and concise in your example.
