My Personal Theory of Child and Adolescent Development

My Personal Theory of Child and Adolescent Development

What are the most important factors in determining how a child turns out as an adult?

The most important factors are consistent love and support, stable relationships, and exposure to positive role models. A nurturing environment helps children feel safe enough to explore, take risks, and make mistakes. I also believe that emotional security, the opportunity to develop a growth mindset, and access to quality education all contribute significantly. These beliefs stem from observing how children in my own family and community thrive when surrounded by encouragement and support.

How do children’s minds grow and change over time?

Children’s minds grow through active exploration and interaction with their environment. At a young age, their thinking is very concrete, and they often understand the world in terms of what they can see and touch. As they grow, they develop more abstract thinking and begin to reflect, reason, and question. I’ve noticed this progression in younger siblings and through volunteering in schools, where I saw children shift from asking “what” questions to “why” questions as they matured.

What is the role of teachers in helping children build a brain?

Teachers are architects of children’s intellectual and emotional development. They create the learning environment, model problem-solving and social skills, and provide scaffolding to help students tackle new challenges. I believe teachers don’t just pass on knowledge—they also shape how children think about themselves and their abilities. A teacher who believed in me made me feel capable, and I hope to provide that same encouragement to others.

How do children and/or adolescents come to a sense of who they are?

Identity forms through a mix of internal reflection and external feedback. Children and adolescents begin to define themselves based on their experiences, relationships, culture, and even struggles. During adolescence, peer feedback becomes influential. My understanding comes from personal experience: I remember shaping my identity based on both how I saw myself and how others treated me during those formative years.
