During my field experience with In-Home Supportive Services (IHSS) in San Joaquin County, I was serving an older Hispanic woman who was depressed and isolated since her husband had died recently. Although she qualified for several programs, she did not want to take her children out of her house or participate in any social service. The client experienced prolonged bereavement and lack of affective presence following the death of a spouse, with a subsequent significant reduction in family and social functioning: Instruments Measuring Resiliency.

To promote resiliency, I would implement a culturally sensitive intervention using motivational interviewing and community outreach to ask her to join a Spanish-speaking group for grieving seniors. Building upon internal strengths and external resources facilitates adaptive coping and positive psychological responses to trauma and adversity (Franklin & Jordan, 2024). In respecting but constructing change based on the client’s cultural heritage, this approach not only taps into the protective cultural identity but also leverages social support, which is crucial to emotional risk reduction and resilience. I would use the Resilience Scale (RS), which was built by Wagnild and Young, to determine whether the intervention is effective. The RS is a free test for clients aged 53-95, written at a 6th-grade level. Therefore, it is an age-appropriate and accessible evaluation.

I would measure this over time using a single-subject design by taking the RS pre- and post-intervention to see any improvement in the client’s resilience levels. This approach aligns with the strengths-based perspective and supports the client’s cultural and emotional needs while promoting measurable outcomes. Measuring resilience in this way offers a structured, evidence-based method for tailoring and evaluating interventions in practice.
