One question I have is, how can I more effectively navigate and deal with political resistance to combating Medicaid postpartum extension legislation in states like Florida? I support SB 348 and HB 645, as documented in my Personal Legislative Agenda, which aims to expand postpartum Medicaid coverage from 60 days to 12 months. Despite bipartisan sponsorship, political opposition to Medicaid expansions or similar initiatives in Florida is a pervasive challenge, often rooted in costs, government intrusion, or eligibility (Rivera‐González et al., 2022): Muddiest Point and Peer Feedback.

While I have engaged in grassroots organizing, developed policy fact sheets, and participated in professional advocacy groups like the Florida Nurses Association, I would benefit from an insight into how others have crafted their message to shape a broader political base. Specifically, I am interested in learning how to strategically use economic data, maternal mortality rates, and community anecdotes to make a compelling argument for lawmakers who may not necessarily prioritize maternal health as a policy issue.

A further inquiry concerns some useful tools and strategies that peers have found helpful in developing legislative testimony and supporting documents to educate decision-makers on maternal health policy. In advocating for SB 348 and the federal Helping MOMS Act (H.R. 8181), I am actively preparing to participate in committee hearings. I wish to ensure my testimony is professional, concise, and impactful.

According to Geller et al. (2023), draft fact sheets using clinical data and evidence from organizations such as the CDC and March of Dimes would like feedback on preparing these materials in a format consistent with legislative expectations. I also need to understand how to balance individual patient stories with statistical and policy data to appeal to the emotional and rational aspects of advocacy.

Furthermore, I am interested in format suggestions, such as one-page briefs or infographics that synthesize complex topics for policymakers without a background in clinical care—according to the Office of the Surgeon General and the HHS (2020), receiving input from those who have been effective at influencing maternal or Medicaid-oriented policy is valuable. I would ensure that I am best positioned to have a meaningful influence on the legislative process and advocate for equitable postpartum care across Florida and beyond.
