Relevance of Demographic and Case Data

Age, sex, and social context are crucial as far as case presentations are concerned because they influence how the counselor perceives the client’s presenting complaints and therapeutic requirements. In the case of Ruby, as a 23-year-old single cisgender woman who was recently divorced, the emotional domain and relationship expectations are affected. Protected Health Information and Confidentiality

Protected health information (PHI) refers to any information that relates to a client’s health status, personal characteristics or the services they have ever received (Isola & Khalili, 2023). Some of the information belonging to PHI includes Ruby’s age, religious beliefs, history of mental health, and marital status. According to Tariq and Hackert (2023), the protection of such information is not only a legal but also an ethical obligation that helps foster confidence and protect the client.

Clients also need to be made aware of circumstances that limit confidentiality, including when a client has to be reported for self-harm or harm to others. This way, the clients feel a certain sense of security and comfort when handling their issues to be dealt with in counseling.
