This is a great post. Indeed, the Myrtle Beach renourishment project is an excellent example of a large-scale coastal restoration initiative that involves multiple stakeholders. This project leveraged key project management principles of stakeholder engagement, resource allocation, and risk management. As project managers, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers must ensure the completion of the project on time, within budget, and in compliance with regulations.

They must also balance the interests of internal stakeholders, such as government agencies and contractors, with external stakeholders, such as residents, environmental groups and the tourism industry, through clear communication and conflict resolution methods. To add on, it would be valuable to explicitly break this down regarding stakeholder involvement in the process versus their experience of the results. Further, sustainable development is a crucial aspect in modern infrastructure projects, making environmental considerations particularly important (Xiaolong et al., 2021). Similar projects like Miami Beach renourishment projects exemplify the contribution of coastal restoration in supporting ideas for economic prosperity and protecting ecosystems.

The Army Corp of Engineers is preparing to start the Myrtle Beach “renourishment project in late spring or early summer.” (Schlink, 2025) The business case consists of renewing the coastline, which will work to protect the homes and businesses in the area as well as make a new beach for residents and tourists.

This work will bring more tourism to the area as well as keep the beach line from washing away. They will be adding sand to the beach as well as building up the dunes, adding fencing, and bringing in additional vegetation. All of this will assist in maintaining the beach.

There are both internal and external stakeholders for this project and they are listed below.

Internal:

1. Government agencies in Myrtle Beach and the surrounding areas will make sure all State and Federal regulations are followed. They will also coordinate funding for the project.
2. U.S. Army Corps of Engineers will be the project managers. As they will oversee the entire project by planning and engineering the renourishment. This group will also make sure that environmental and safety standards are followed.
3. Contractors will oversee the work that needs to be done to complete the renourishment project on time and within budget.

External:

1. Residents and property owners will be participants in public meetings, advocate for or against the project, and then provide feedback on the project’s future impact once completed.
2. The tourism industry will track the impact on tourism as the project progresses, work with the local government and contractors to reduce disruptions to tourism and advertise the completion of the beach project to gain new tourism opportunities.
3. Environmental groups will also have a say in what is being done with the project. They will advocate for the current wildlife and habitats, watch the impact on the surrounding environment, and also make sure all environmental regulations are implemented.
4. The State Government will be a stakeholder as they will be providing funding at state-level and also ensuring there is not a disruption to the tourism industry.

The above seven stakeholders all have a role to play in the successful completion of the Myrtle Beach renourishment project.
