Quantitative research design allows a more mechanistic understanding of the researched concepts (Schroeder et al., 2022). Quantitative designs have numerous strengths. Foremost, they can be used to systematically describe a large volume of data, thus allowing generalization of the findings. Quantitative data also allows for a more objective analysis and comparison of the research variables, making data extraction easier.
Likewise, they integrate more rigorous analytical methods, enabling research to establish patterns and trends from the results. Quantitative methods also have a higher predictive power, as the researchers can identify correlations between variables.
On the downside, quantitative research has a limited context as they do not capture human experiences that may be interplaying in the findings. Also, it requires larger sample sizes to obtain more meaningful data. The analytical techniques utilized in quantitative design are also complex and may require some training to use. This makes the methodology expensive.
A quantitative design was selected as the research questions necessitated a mechanistic approach in their address. The first research question compares the effectiveness of soap and water and alcohol-based rubs in preventing nosocomial infection. The quantitative design represents findings numerically, allowing easier comparisons (Smith & Tobiano, 2023).
The third question interrogates the effectiveness of the influenza vaccine in preventing flu among persons aged 70 years and above. Numerical representation of the findings allows for simpler elucidation of the effectiveness of the vaccine. The fourth question explores the relationship between alcohol and breast cancer. Quantitative data identifies correlations between variables and is thus suited for the question.
