Ethics and Healthcare Delivery
Creating a Culture of Ethical Practice
In my capstone project, this can be fostered in three ways to promote ethical practice in the healthcare organization: First, narcotic waste documentation procedures ensure that as little medication as possible is wasted and that individuals are more accountable; this, in return, reduces the chances of the organization being penalized for misusing medications. This is in line with the principle of non-maleficence, which requires patients and other stakeholders to be protected against probable damages associated with medication blunders or abuse. The crafted methodology ensures that there is no excessive unlicensed manufacturing or distribution of drugs and medicines by maintaining the trust of the patient and healthcare givers: Ethics and Healthcare Delivery.
Secondly, the organization enhances its ethics of practice in substance use and control through aggressive training among its staff, covering but not limited to their competencies and their ethical discernment. This is accomplished through a standardized hybrid educational approach that covers all shifts and is further enhanced through case studies and scenarios that allow the personnel to understand the day-to-day substance use and ethical practice. Finally, the organization enables the development of an ethical culture by utilizing two-nurse verification, in which responsibility and accountability for medication waste processes are enhanced, decreasing the chance of ethical violations. This practice develops not only the safety of the patient but also a positive working environment where discussing moral issues is expected.
Facilitating Ethical Patient-Centered Care
As a nurse leader, I can help ensure that ethical patient-centered care is provided by keeping the lines of communication open between the nursing staff, pharmacy, and unit administration. This provides an avenue to promptly address variances in ethical concerns in narcotic waste procedures while ensuring that the safety of patients remains paramount. Regular huddles and feedback sessions provide an avenue for staff to express concerns about workflow challenges that could compromise ethical practice, such as the time constraints of high census periods.
In listening actively and responding to these concerns, I am able to develop solutions that keep the principles of ethics intact and continue with efficient patient care delivery. Additionally, the introduction of weekly audits allows for the early detection of any potential ethical issues and their proactive resolution for continuous improvement in our medication management practices.
Application of ANA Code of Ethics
A number of the ANA Code of Ethics for Nurses directly guide this capstone project. Specifically, Provision 3 discusses protecting patients’ rights, health, and safety through promotion and advocacy by the nurse, which applies to this project regarding appropriate medication management and documentation in a standardized narcotic waste process (Yoder-Wise, 2019). This provision also emphasizes the development of mechanisms that ensure patients are safe and their dignity, as well as that of the other parties involved, is respected.
Moreover, Provision 4-Responsibility and Accountability in Nursing Practice, applies to our project because this provision also addresses proper documentation and the two-nurse verification requirement (American Nurses Association, 2015). It reminds one that professional obligations are always maintained, along with accepting personal responsibility for one’s nursing judgment and actions, a principle quite relevant to controlled substance management.
The project also embodies Provision 6, which speaks to maintaining integrity and safe conditions in healthcare settings. According to Hussein et al. (2021), high ethical standards in medication management are important in ensuring quality health care and safety for patients. Our implementation of standardized procedures and regular audits helps ensure these ethical standards are consistently met across all shifts. The emphasis of the provision on creating an environment that supports ethical practice is reflected in our project’s comprehensive approach to staff education, clear documentation requirements, and regular compliance monitoring.
In addition, the sustainability plan involves continuous ethics considerations through regular review meetings and updates of training materials so that ethical practices remain at the center of medication management. This commitment to continuous improvement and ethical practice will help gain patients’ trust and maintain the integrity of the healthcare delivery system.

Question
Getting Started
In complex healthcare environments, an awareness of how consumer relations affect the provision of nursing care is essential. Consumers are faced with many changes and challenges as they navigate the healthcare delivery system. When clients enter the system, they lose a significant amount of control and their families may experience stress due to changes in relationships with their loved ones and the burden of additional responsibilities.
The Code of Ethics for Nurses requires nurses to maintain a primary commitment to clients and their families and to involve them as they develop and implement individualized plans for care. Client-centered care requires relationships of mutuality and reciprocity, which results in respectful and effective communication and establishes a dynamic that promotes optimal care.
Upon successful completion of the course material, you will be able to:
- Explore the characteristics of organizations with high ethical standards.
- Analyze perceptions of and challenges for nurses and clients in the provision of client-centered health care.

Background Information
In the assigned readings this week, you will explore ethical practices associated with healthcare delivery systems. You will identify and analyze similarities and differences in perceptions of nurse leaders and clients related to the complex system and the provision of care. The activities are designed to assist you in discovering how nurse leaders facilitate ethical client-centered care and promote positive experiences with healthcare.
As you develop the discussion response below, consider a common client population associated with your capstone project.
