Creating Professional Identity – Nursing

Nursing is a broad profession in the healthcare field that focuses on patient care and healthcare management. According to Cao et al. (2023), nursing professionalism is the provision of care based on the principles of altruism, caring, and professionalism. Therefore, nursing professionalism identity can be defined as how nurses perceive their responsibilities and roles based on their education, the cultural context of their practice, and their experiences. Nursing professionalism identity also includes adherence to the nursing profession’s values and ethical standards. The most important professional identity characteristics or attributes include knowledge and competence, ethical standards, professional behavior, communication skills, and leadership and advocacy.

Ethical standards emphasize commitment to patient welfare and adherence to the nursing code. Knowledge and competence include the application of evidence-based practice and continuous learning to promote high-quality care. Knowledge and competence support leadership and advocacy, which includes taking initiative in patient care and advocating for patients’ and nurses’ rights. Nurses must also uphold professional behavior by demonstrating accountability, respect, and integrity in professional interactions. Professional behaviour also includes using communication skills to maintain effective interactions with other healthcare professionals and patients in the healthcare setting.

My focus is to adapt the characteristics of my professional identity to promote my nursing career development. One of the measures I will take to adapt these characteristics is taking on leadership roles within my team so that I can be actively involved in leadership and advocacy. The second measure is prioritizing ethical practice so that I can uphold ethical standards and demonstrate professional behavior. I will also seek mentorship to improve my nursing knowledge and competencies as part of adapting knowledge and competence. I will additionally adapt communication skills by practicing transparent communication with colleagues and patients to improve patient outcomes. I will also use the knowledge and skills I have gathered through my education to improve patient care and offer high-quality care.

I will rely on my educational background as a major building block in my nursing career because it has played a significant role in shaping my professional identity. For example, my education has helped me develop a foundation in nursing practices and principles by promoting continuous learning. My education has also helped me understand the ethical standards in nursing practice and what I should do to maintain professional behavior by offering knowledge on the roles and responsibilities of nurses. However, I have some goals for continued professional identity formation during my career as a nurse, which I must achieve to promote my career development as a nurse. The goals include participating in nursing associations to advocate for nurses’ and patients’ rights, contributing to policymaking to improve the nursing practice, and furthering my education to stay informed about the latest nursing practices.
