Discussion – The Role of Ethics in Promoting Equity and Addressing Oppression

Discussion – The Role of Ethics in Promoting Equity and Addressing Oppression

The NICWA, NEA, and NASW Code of Ethics address social diversity and oppression by advocating for and promoting culturally competent practices made uniquely for certain marginalized groups. NEA centers on special education, whereby it mainly advocates for children with disabilities to have equitable educational opportunities and learning environments that are inclusive (National Education Association, 2021). NICWA focuses on advocating for the well-being of Native American children by reducing the large numbers of children who were being placed separated from their parents, extended families, and communities by state child welfare and private adoption agencies even when there were family members capable of taking them in (National Indian Child Welfare Association, n.d.). Lastly, yet importantly, the NASW Code of Ethics emphasizes the significance of social workers having a deep understanding and recognition of the client’s cultural background in order to foster an inclusive approach that recognizes the strengths within diverse communities. Collectively, these three organizations’ objectives are the dismantling of systemic barriers, advocating for marginalized communities, and making sure that systems that govern society are responsive to the unique social, cultural, and personal needs of these children. All this is to achieve equity in society and stop oppression in all domains.

Question: Equity is a right for everyone in society. However, the structural-functionalism perspective argues that social inequality serves a needed purpose in society, mostly by motivating those at the bottom to work harder and climb to the top, which then benefits society as a whole. Supposing equity was provided for everyone, would this lead to demotivation of people and eventual stagnation in society’s growth, or would it be more beneficial?
