Discussion – Public Health

Public health is among the fields that prioritize communities’ health and overall well-being. I am interested in public health because I have always been passionate about improving people’s well-being. My volunteer work during the COVID-19 pandemic also motivated my choice to study public health because I interacted with many people with limited access to healthcare education. These interactions helped me identify an opportunity to help people access health education by working as a public health nurse or specialist. The interactions also enlightened me on the vital role that public health nurses and specialists play in improving the health of communities. Therefore, I will focus on studying public health to acquire the knowledge, skills, and competencies I need to offer public health education to promote healthy lifestyles and engage in research for injury and disease prevention.

My work background has significantly influenced my decision to pursue public health. Running a childcare center has helped me realize the importance of understanding the behavioral and social foundation of primary care and the need to consider community needs when planning healthcare delivery strategies. Therefore, I am pursuing the public health course to gain knowledge of the patterns of population health, community needs assessment and planning and the social and organizational structures through which health services are provided. This information will be essential in improving the delivery of healthcare services in the childcare center, leading to the improved well-being of the children at the center. My role as a mental health specialist in the community also requires understanding how to assess community needs and healthcare delivery and identify social and organizational structures that could impact access to mental healthcare services. Therefore, the public health course is vital because it will help me identify areas where I can work with communities to offer a holistic approach when providing services to my clients. The course will also help me learn how public health relates to childcare, thus enabling me to improve health outcomes in the childcare center.

Although I look forward to acquiring knowledge from as many topics related to public health as possible, I have selected some topics of interest that I will emphasize. The selected topics are mental health, immunizations, and sexual health, targeting children and women. My choice is influenced by my role as a mental health specialist and the responsibility to take care of the well-being of the children in my childcare center. For example, being a mental health specialist requires a proper understanding of mental health as a public health issue. The public health course can offer this understanding by providing knowledge of the prevalence of mental health issues and the factors that contribute to mental health issues that affect people’s social and physical well-being.

The course will also offer knowledge of how to prevent the associated impacts of mental health in communities and how to treat and manage mental disorders. The immunizations topic will help me understand how to prevent diseases in the child center through immunization and equip me with the knowledge I need to offer healthcare education on the importance of immunizations, especially for young children. Gaining knowledge on sexual health will also help me offer health education on reproductive health, sexually transmitted infections, childbirth, contraception, anatomy, and human development. This education will be essential in improving the health and well-being of communities, leading to improved health outcomes.
