Statement of Purpose – Hospitality Management
Joining this prestigious institution is an honor, and I would like to express my enthusiasm for the field of hospitality management. Since childhood, I have been interested in the versatility and focus of people in the hospitality field. My childhood experience was witnessing my family’s catering business, and it amazed me how many organizational and coordination tasks were needed to deliver a great event and satisfy the clients.
What began in childhood became a true passion as I got older. I found out that I could organize events and started doing freelance work for events, from choosing the menu to arranging the seating plan and everything in between. During these assignments, I gained a lot of insights into the intricacies of managing a hospitality business, from demand and supply to staffing and training of employees. Currently, my husband and I are planning to open a restaurant business that will serve as a branch of our catering service. That is why I am confident that obtaining a graduate degree in hospitality management will enable me to acquire the strategic, operational, and leadership knowledge necessary to start and develop our new business.
In addition to refining the technical competencies necessary for positions such as revenue management, culinary and food operations, and hospitality technology, I am most eager to strengthen my leadership skills within the hospitality industry. My goal is not only to manage the daily functioning of the restaurant but to help the restaurant develop a strong organizational culture for all the employees. Undoubtedly, the program’s curriculum, the opportunity to be guided by a faculty mentor, and the practical experience gained during this program will help me improve my strategic thinking, people management, and creative problem-solving skills.
Notably, my interest in the industry is not limited to the technicalities of the business alone. I am very passionate about the social responsibilities that hospitality businesses can bring to the communities. As an events planner, I have seen firsthand how people can be brought together under the banner of food and taste. I strongly agree that a restaurant can be so much more than just a place to get food; it can be a center for people to socialize, to have fun, and to learn. When it comes to opening up our new business, I am committed to creating a restaurant that offers delicious meals while promoting local suppliers, donating to charity, and creating a place for community members to gather.
In this regard, I am looking forward to joining the active, multicultural environment of the graduate program and university. As a first-generation college student from a cross-cultural background, I have benefited from the support and encouragement of educators who have motivated me to strive for the best that I can be. I would like to give back the favor by being a positive influence and a guide to other students, especially those from low backgrounds or aspiring to be in the hospitality industry. Furthermore, I have been managing a small family business related to the food industry, so I have a practical understanding of the problems and prospects of the heads of hospitality businesses. I look forward to making these discoveries with my classmates and hearing from them about their discoveries.
To sum up, further education in hospitality management will be a logical and inspiring step in my career. Thus, by enhancing my technical knowledge, leadership skills, and vision of the hospitality industry as the means to create more resilient communities, I will be prepared to pursue the goal I have set for myself—to open and run a thriving restaurant business that will be a hub of community life. I am ready to bring passion, creativity, and teamwork to the vibrant graduate program and look forward to deepening my experience in hospitality at this prestigious university.
