Reflection – Advocacy, Safety, and Care for Childbearing Families
Advanced-level nursing allows nurses to expand their skills in diverse nursing concepts and clinical care. Over the past weeks, this course has attempted to impart to the learners the knowledge and skills on several aspects of nursing care that will be valuable in their professional nursing practice, patient care, advocacy, and health promotion duties. The course, centered on childbearing and childbearing families, packaged pertinent learning points that will be impactful in advanced-level nursing professional practice.
The assigned reading, clinical experiences, assessments, and course activities widened my knowledge of childbearing and childbearing families. These learning points helped me meet the program outcome of advocating for positive health outcomes through compassionate, evidence-based, collaborative advanced nursing practice in multiple ways. Firstly, the assigned reading enhanced my knowledge of diverse aspects of childbearing, empowering me to utilize evidence-based strategies to educate the masses on various aspects of childcare. I am now confident explaining to various stakeholders the need to bolster child care and their role in ensuring safe child care. Secondly, the activities and clinical experience gave me insight into the issues children, especially those from marginalized communities, are facing. As Smitherman et al. (2021) report, children from low socioeconomic communities and otherwise marginalized communities are disproportionately affected by child-specific healthcare problems. This knowledge will inform the need to voice their concerns in the overall pursuit of healthy living.
The competency selected under the third domain of the AACN essentials is 3.5- demonstrate advocacy strategies. Learning in the course helped me to achieve these outcomes in many ways. Firstly, the knowledge I obtained from the assigned readings empowered me to be a nurse advocate. Advanced nurses play an important role in healthcare reforms (Chiu et al., 2021). The assigned readings and clinical experiences imparted to me the knowledge on childbearing, allowing me to have a voice and advocate for issues affecting child care. Through these skills and expertise, I can appraise advocacy priorities based on the population’s needs. In this case, I can leverage what I observed from my clinical experiences to inform stakeholders of areas that should be focused on when advocating for better child care. Secondly, I can leverage my experiences with children from marginalized communities to inform an interdisciplinary group on the approaches for effective advocacy. The knowledge I obtained on the disparities in child care across marginalized communities can help promote an advocacy front that is diverse, inclusive, equitable, and abides by social justice. This will enhance the effectiveness of the advocacy processes. Additionally, these approaches can be leveraged to educate marginalized communities on best practices in child care.
The competency selected under the NONPF domain of quality and safety is NP 5.2- contribute to the culture of patient safety. The course has helped me attain this competency in multiple ways. First, the assigned readings emphasized the role of advanced nurses in nurturing a safe environment and asserted the significance of advanced nurses utilizing evidence-based clinical guidelines during care delivery to promote the health and safety of a child. This way, they help me attain the stated competency. Secondly, my clinical experiences imparted to me the skills required for the assessment of a child’s growth and development. This way, I can detect developmental anomalies and any other manifestations of illness and take action to correct the identified health problem. This will further promote the safety of the child.
